Sexson's gone; who's next?

Posted at 6:58 pm by John Sleeper

Wrote a reaction piece on the Richie Sexson release for Friday's paper. It's got to be a move that's best for all concerned and one I have to wonder why it came so late. I refuse to believe that Sexson's washed up. I think he was so mentally hashed after nearly two seasons' worth of slumping that a change of scenery was the only answer.

So now they have Miguel Cairo and Jose Vidro to play first base, at least in the short term, although they've been working out Kenji Johjima there. And that's only because Jeff Clement is the team's catcher of the future.

Understandably, Sexson was on the receiving end of a lot of abuse from fans. In the rare times he chose to talk about his struggles, I found him to be forthcoming and honest. But when he chose not to talk and hide in the clubhouse, which was by far more frequent, it was difficult not to be frustrated with him.

Maybe this signals a semi-mass exodus of the roster. Manager Jim Riggleman wanted to give players time to see what they could do. That time might have run out. The popular pick for the next to go is Vidro. Then, it's anyone's guess.

One thing's for sure. The M's will be dumping salary in the next eight months to rebuild. Don't get too used to seeing these guys.
