Garden art the Monte Cristo

'Art of the Garden': Meet locals artists tonight when the Arts Council of Snohomish County hosts a reception to launch its new exhibit. More than 50 artists will be shown in a variety of mediums.

The free catered reception runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at the council's gallery inside the Monte Cristo Hotel, 1507 Wall St., Everett. The exhibit itself, "Art of the Garden," runs through Aug. 21. For more information, call 425-257-8380 or visit www.artscouncilofsnoco.org.

Slug-off: It's impossible to get rid of slugs entirely, but Gail Lovell, whose garden is one of the Edmonds in Bloom tour gardens, keeps them at bay with rings of sheet copper. Slugs don't like crawling across it.

She buys rolls of sheet copper from Alaska Copper & Brass Co., on the Seattle waterfront. At home she cuts off a length and forms a ring for her most slugalicious plants.

At $2 a pound it's not cheap, but unlike conventional slug baits it's nontoxic for animals and doesn't need to be continually applied. Many hardware stores and nurseries also carry copper tape, which can be attached to raised beds. Alaska Copper & Brass Co.is at 3223 Sixth Ave. S., Seattle. Call 800-552-7661 for information or directions.

And check out Gail Lovell's beautiful garden in our preview of the Edmonds in Bloom tour on pages 6 to 8.
