I confess.
The light bulb on my side of the bed is not energy efficient.
My responsible husband came home some time ago with a stock of fluorescent bulbs and eagerly installed them, among other places, in each bedside lamp.
That night, with both lamps on, I could feel my skin radiating green under the new bulb.
I asked him to change the bulbs back, and he refused.
“We need to be environmentally aware! Energy efficient! Earth conscious!” he said.
“I need to feel good about my skin!” I said.
We compromised. His lamp is eco. Mine is not.
Now, there’s a solution. Thanks to an industrious coworker, I discovered Energy Star’s “Choose-A-Light” guide.
Thanks to the guide, I now know that a higher-Kelvin bulb will emit a harsher, hospital-like glow. A lower-Kelvin bulb will illuminate the rooms of my home in warmth, like the golden light of cottages in those paintings of the English countryside in winter.
The guide’s interactive feature shows the illumination of outdoor, A-shape, glove, tubed, candle and dimmable lights. Clicking on each light shows the extent of the illumination.
Give it a try! Let me know if, like me, you’re inspired to make the change – for real, this time.
