Our Towns: North County update

Arlington

Highway 9 closure planned July 18-20

Highway 9 north of Arlington is scheduled to shut down on the weekend of July 18-20 while crews install a culvert beneath the highway at Kackman Creek, the state Department of Transportation reported Thursday.

The highway is set to close at 252nd Street NE, also known as Kackman Road, from 10 p.m. July 18 to 5 a.m. July 20. Drivers will be required to detour around the closure using 268th Street NE, Highway 530 and I-5.

The new 6-foot square-box culvert aims to improve fish passage for bull trout and other local species.

The work is part of a $20.7 million project to improve about three miles of the highway between Schloman Road and 268th Street NE north of Arlington. On June 30, the state opened a new straight stretch of Highway 9 between Schloman Road and 252nd Street NE, replacing a curvy, shady stretch of the road that presented safety concerns.

The project, mostly funded by a 2003 gas tax hike, is expected to wrap up this fall.

The festival features numerous competitions, including disc catching, flyball and obedience; "best in show" contests such as best costume, celebrity look-alike and longest ears; and booths with dog-related interest groups and vendors.

Admission and parking are free, with donations accepted to support the city's planned new off-leash dog park at Strawberry Fields.

Poochapalooza is co-sponsored by the Marysville Dog Owners Group and the city of Marysville.
