Brent Lillibridge's first major league home run

Posted at 1:37 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Former Jackson High School and University of Washington baseball standout Brent Lillibridge achieved a huge milestone this past weekend.

Lillibridge, an Atlanta Braves infielder, hit his first career major league home run Saturday. He launched a solo shot to left-center field in the ninth inning of Atlanta’s 4-1 victory over San Diego.

On July 7 Lillibridge was recalled by Atlanta from Triple-A Richmond. He started at shortstop for Atlanta Friday, Saturday and Sunday in San Diego. After going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Friday, he went 5-for-8 with two doubles, the homer, three RBI and three runs scored in the final two games of the series.

Lillibridge’s historic homer came on a pitch thrown in the lower-middle part of the zone by reliever Joe Thatcher. If you watch the video (click on the second link above) you can see Lillibridge crack a big smile right before he gets to the dugout.

Lillibridge, who is hitting .237 (9 for 38) for Atlanta this season, might be with the Braves for awhile after the All-Star break. He is filling in for injured starting shortstop Yunel Escobar (left shoulder), who today was scheduled to have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam, according to MLB.com reporter Mark Bowman.
