Sign up for seminar on public disclosure laws

FEDERAL WAY -- Public officials can sign up now for a special three-day seminar in May 2009 on Washington's open government and public disclosure laws.

The Washington Coalition for Open Government is accepting applications for its annual Open Government Leadership Institute May 1-3 at the Dumas Bay Centre in Federal Way.

The nonprofit organization will select 36 officials from throughout the state and from all levels of government to participate. They will receive instruction from educators, lawyers, political science professors and journalists on the legal aspects, history and practical use of the open government and disclosure regulations. Deadline to apply is January 2009.

Tuition is $250 for coalition members and $275 for nonmembers and includes two nights of lodging and four meals.

For information and applications, go to www.washingtoncog.org or submit a request by mail to WCOG, 6351 Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle, WA 98107-2664.

Meet candidates for Superior Court judge

Candidates for two contested Snohomish County Superior Court judicial races are scheduled to speak at a forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday .

There will be an opportunity to meet the candidates at 5:30 p.m. in the Weyerhaeuser Room at the Everett Transit Station, 3201 Smith Ave., Everett.

Three attorneys, George Appel, Jim Johanson and Joe Wilson, are vying for the seat that's opening with the retirement of Judge Richard Thorpe. Superior Court Judge Eric Lucas is being challenged by former Superior Court Judge David Hulbert. Lucas defeated Hulbert in 2004.

The forum is sponsored by the Snohomish County Chapter of Washington Women Lawyers along with the Snohomish County Bar Association. Complimentary appetizers will be available.

For more information, contact Beth Cullen at elizabeth.cullen@co.snohomish.wa.us, Melanie Thomas-Dane at melanie@zachorthomas.com or Charlie Blackman at cblackman@co.snohomish.wa.us.
