Reader question of the week

Posted at 1:21 pm by Nick Patterson

Alan Caldwell (see link at left) recently delved into the overage situation for every team heading into training camp. He gives a good picture of what sort of decisions every team will be faced with.

Everett finds itself in a different situation from last summer. The only presumptive Tip overage candidates for next season are defensemen Taylor Ellington and Graham Potuer, meaning Everett likely will be an overage buyer this year rather than an overage seller.

Assuming Ellington and Potuer do take up two of the three overage slots, I'm interested to know -- should anyone out there be dropping in during the offseason -- what you think the Tips should do to fill the third slot. Who would you trade for and what would you be willing to give up? Feel free to include rationale on whether you think the Tips should try to win anything this season, or whether you think they should be focusing on the future and not trading away anything of value for a one-year player.

I'll get the ball rolling. The northwest tends to be pretty fickle when it comes to sports fandom, so there's the risk of losing your fanbase if you sacrifice a whole season, so I'd go for a significant acquisition. I'd probably start by calling up old trading partner Swift Current to see who among their forwards (Zack Smith, Keegan Dansereau, Dale Weise) is available. Everett lost a lot of offense from last season and could use someone to pick up the slack. I suspect it would take at least a third rounder to pry one of them loose, perhaps more. But if a team is willing to trade a third rounder to move up four spots in the second round of the bantam draft, it should be willing to at least match that for a proven player.

What do you think?

just a thought, but with kyle beach as your only true scoring threat and his ability to block punches with his head, i would be looking for a couple of guys who don't mind doing the dirty work. teams will be doing everything they can to get kyle in the box any way they can. a little protection goes a long way at this age.

Overager
I'd trade a D guy and a draft pick for an offensive hot shot if I were the GM (which I'm not, thank goodness). We don't need to have a winning team to keep the fan base as long as we have something fun to watch. Ichiro has sold a lot of tickets despite the win/loss record. Beach will keep fans coming back. But Beach alone isn't enough. But I'm sure glad I'm not Doug. But I trust his choices. He's made some great ones.

Defense
Seems like if Ellington comes back (and I'm not as confident in that as everyone else seems to be, except that it's reassuring that Manitoba is DEEP at defense), the team may be better off getting some scoring help. The 89's and 90's will be looked to for pretty much all of the scoring this season, and they'll need some senior leadership. Besides, you'd have Ellington, Potuer, Kieffer, Alexander, de la Lande and Regier returning at D, and it sure looks like Paul Sohor is ready to step up and claim a roster spot -- that's 7. Throw in the possibility of a wildcard player like Brenden Stephen, Gabriel Minville, or Devin Dambrauskas making the team, and I'm really not convinced that they MUST get more D.

As for what to give up, I'm not enough of a GM to really have much clue in that department... I do think the team can and should make every effort to be competitve and put a good product on the ice even during what appears to be a rebuilding period the next few years. If they sell it all to build for the future, expect attendence to plummet -- which I guess would make more elbow room for me, so that's not all bad. But this isn't Canada or Minnesota, people around here have a hard time paying good money to watch a bad team, unless it's the Mariners.
