Lawn, schmlawn...

Why keep it?
In my two-mile walk home from work recently, I dodged more sprinklers than I can remember. As I approached my own home, I encountered grass that threatened to take over the shrubbery. In my neighborhood, that’s a felony.
Whenever I hear that lawnmower running, I long for Pacific Northwest-style landscaping: native growth that naturally thrives here. Unfortunately, it’s a rental house, and mowing the lawn is part of our rental agreement. It would cost our landlords to rip out the lawn and replace it with something more environmentally sound.
In Las Vegas, the local water district now pays residents to rip out lawn and replace it with water-efficient landscaping. At $1.50 per square foot, the cash is enough to offset some of the cost.
If you’re willing to go it alone, the Washington Native Plant Society has a useful guide.
