ESPN.com story on Mitch Canham

Posted at 3:31 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

Lake Stevens High School alum Mitch Canham has already accomplished so much: Two-time College World Series champion, winner of The Herald’s 2007 Man of the Year in Sports award, 57th overall pick in last year’s Major League Baseball draft. … The catcher’s list of achievements goes on and on.

Canham has also endured an unthinkable amount of tragedy. Five years ago his mom died of a drug overdose. Then in March his younger brother, Dustin Canham, died while serving as a Marine.

Fighting through emotional pain and lingering questions about the cause of his brother’s death, Mitch Canham has been playing baseball in California for the Lake Elsinore Storm, a Class-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.

To read an in-depth column about Canham’s struggle, written by ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick, click here.
