Channeling Pedro Grifol
Former AquaSox manager Pedro Grifol was renowned for his fiery nature, one that often saw him hitting the showers early upon being thumbed out of the game by an umpire.
Current Everett manager Jose Moreno has a more even disposition, but he's nevertheless giving Grifol a run for his money.
Moreno was ejected from each of the first two games of the series against Eugene, the first time he was thrown out in back-to-back games in his managerial career.
"That's four in one week," a laughing Moreno said. "I think I'm going to break the record here."
Moreno was ejected from Monday's game in the seventh inning when pitcher Eddy Fernandez was called for a balk, scoring a run from third. He was tossed from Tuesday's game in the eighth inning when Tyson Gillies was called out on strikes, ending the inning with the go-ahead run on second base.
And although Moreno can laugh about it now, there was purpose behind his ejections.
"I know umpires are going to make mistakes, we're all human," Moreno said. "But we have to be consistent, that's all we ask. One inning a pitch is a ball, the next inning it's a strike. If it's early in the game then OK, you missed it, no problem. But in the last innings with the winning run on second base, and then you're going to call a strike on a ball in the dirt? No way.
"I'm going to take care of my players," Moreno continued. "We need them in the game, so if there's going to be anybody out it's going to be me."
Raben, LaFromboise out: Everett is currently without two of its most effective players as outfielder Dennis Raben and starting pitcher Bobby LaFromboise are on the shelf.
Raben, leading the team in batting going into Wednesday night's game at .375, has been playing with a finger injury that he picked up during his college season at the University of Miami. X-rays were negative, but he's expected to sit out three or four days.
LaFromboise, possessor of a solid 3.43 ERA in five starts, would normally have been scheduled to start today. However, he threw just three innings in his previous start and was skipped this time through the rotation because of a dead arm. Fortunately for the Sox, it coincided with the arrival of Ryan Feierabend for his two rehabilitation starts. The Sox hope LaFromboise is ready to go the next time his turn comes around.
New pitcher: Everett added a new pitcher to its roster in the form of left-hander Erik Averill.
Averill, a 24-year-old from Tempe, Ariz., was originally a 20th-round pick in the 2005 draft by the Detroit Tigers. However, the Arizona State University product, following a solid season in the mid single-A Midwest League in 2006, lost his entire 2007 season to reconstructive elbow surgery and was subsequently released by the Tigers.
Signed by the Seattle Mariners as a non-drafted free agent earlier this year, Averill pitched one inning for Peoria of the rookie Arizona League and one inning for High Desert of the high single-A California League before being sent to Everett.
