Contact Carol MacPherson (cmacpherson@heraldnet.com or 425-339-3472).   Published: Friday, July 18, 2008 CHILDREN'S THEATER City has more than enough parking As a building and business owner in downtown Everett, I wish to present opposition to the petition presented on the front page article on July 8 in The Herald regarding parking being more important than a children's theater. The theater in question would eliminate zero parking spaces as it is a remodel of an existing structure. The plaza, which the petition supports, eliminates 20-30 spaces. The 459 spaces the article references as a concern are akin to the boy who cried wolf. Across the street from the proposed theater is the Port Gardner Parking Garage, which is less that 50 percent occupied. Everett has adequate downtown parking as stated in the downtown study released last year. One issue that distorts the parking situation is workers who utilize the street for free parking by moving their cars on cue. An additional parking garage will not change their parking habits. Brenda Stonecipher is right on her assessment of the benefactors of the parking proponents being downtown developers. A children's theater will bring families and revenue to Everett, similar to the success of the children's museum. Attractions like the Village Theatre, Children's Museum, Artspace and the Events Center help make Everett the All-America City as recognized in 2002. Parking garages alone do not win the city accolades and attract people to live, work and do life in Everett. Stan Price Everett
