Despite being four games under .500, the AquaSox pulled within striking distance of the West Division-leading Salem-Keizer Volcanoes by defeating the Volcanoes 9-3 Thursday night. Tyson Gillies went 4-for-5 and Steven Hensley threw six solid innings as Everett (13-17) prevailed in the opening game of the three-game series. Francisco Peguero homered to lead Salem-Keizer (16-14). Everett matched its season highs with nine runs and 16 hits. Manelik Pimentel went 3-for-5 and Fleming Baez drove in three runs for the Sox. Meanwhile, Hensley turned in his second straight solid start. In his six innings, he gave up three runs on six hits and one walk, striking out six. Everett opened the scoring in the top of the third, Luis Nunez tripling off the wall in left to score Gillies from second, giving the Sox a 1-0 lead. The Sox got two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Pimentel and Ben Billingsley. In the fifth, Pimentel hit an RBI double over the head of center fielder Damon Wright, putting Everett ahead 4-0. Salem-Keizer finally broke through against Hensley in the bottom of the fifth with three singles. Wright's soft liner drove in a run to make it 4-1. The Sox surged further ahead in the sixth. Billingsley smacked an RBI triple to right and later scored on Nunez's suicide squeeze bunt to make it 6-1. Peguero then hit his homer, a solo shot, in the bottom of the sixth, and the Volcanoes added another run in the seventh on Ryan Lormand's RBI groundout to make it 6-3. The Sox turned it into a rout in the ninth when Baez hit a bases-loaded double to center, clearing the bases to complete the scoring.
