MLB NOTEBOOK

YANKEES: Richie Sexson finalized his contract with New York and was immediately plugged into the starting lineup against Oakland. Sexson was released by Seattle last week. The big first baseman hit .344 with five home runs in 71 at-bats against lefties. He hit a two-out RBI single in his first at-bat. Sexson finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in New York's 7-1 victory over the Athletics.

RANGERS: Texas came out of the All-Star break with a familiar face playing a familiar position. Hank Blalock was activated from the disabled list and returned to his original position of third base. Blalock, a former All-Star at third base who has played that position his entire career with Texas, was scheduled to make the switch to first base when he returned from the DL.

ATHLETICS: Oakland activated shortstop Bobby Crosby from the disabled list and moved left-hander Dallas Braden into their rotation. Braden, who had been pitching in relief, will replace Joe Blanton in the rotation. The A's also purchased Lenny DiNardo's contract from Class AAA Sacramento. This is DiNardo's third stint with the club this season, and manager Bob Geren said the lefty will work out of the bullpen. Crosby had been sidelined since July 3 with a strained left hamstring.

PHILLIES: Philadelphia moved Snohomish native Adam Eaton to the bullpen to open a spot in the rotation for newly acquired Joe Blanton, who is expected to start for the team Tuesday against the New York Mets. Eaton is 3-8 this season with a 5.71 ERA in 19 games, all starts. He has started all but two of the 195 games he has pitched in the majors but is switching to long relief.

NATIONALS: Washington outfielder Wily Mo Pena went on the 15-day disabled list because of an injured left shoulder that will require surgery. Washington also activated Johnny Estrada from the 15-day DL, giving the team four catchers.

CUBS: Chicago placed Jon Lieber on the 15-day disabled list because of a right foot strain and recalled infielder Micah Hoffpauir from Class AAA Iowa. The 38-year-old Lieber is 2-3 with a 3.43 ERA this season. He last pitched on July 10 against Cincinnati, allowing two runs and three hits in two innings of work. He was put on the disabled list retroactive to July 11.
