Bainbridge, Richland win openers at state Little League tournament

MILL CREEK -- Tino Peleti knocked in five runs with a double and a home run on Friday as Bainbridge Island defeated West Seattle 13-2 in the opening game of the Washington State Little League Majors Baseball Tournament in Mill Creek.

Bainbridge jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first -- three runs scoring on Peleti's double -- and the game was never close after that. Bainbridge right-hander Ben Kussie pitched the complete five-inning game for the victory. Kussie did not yield a run until the final inning when West Seattle's Andrew Crunican lined a fastball over the left-centerfield fence for a two-run homer to give West Seattle its only runs of the game.

Each team earned its berth in the State Tournament by winning its district tournament. Bainbridge Island is the Division 2 champion, and West Seattle represents Division 7.

Bainbridge Island advances to play Steel Lake at 10 a.m. Sunday . West Seattle plays Monday at 4:30 p.m. against a to-be-determined opponent.

Greater Richland 9, Central Vancouver 0: A five-hit, six-run second inning helped Greater Richland (Div. 12) cruise to a 9-0 win over Central Vancouver (Div. 4) in Game 2 of the State Little League Majors Tournament .

Starter Mason Nelson went the distance for Richland, scattering four hits with an effective mix of speeds and recording the complete-game shutout. Nelson also got it done at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored.

Left fielder Isaac Benard also contributed three hits and two runs on the night, manufacturing his own run in the fourth. After a bases empty single, the speedy Benard took second and third bases on a single wild pitch, then raced home on another to score Richland's seventh run.

Greater Richland plays Spokane South at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Central Vancouver plays Monday at 7 p.m. against a to-be-determined opponent.
