Local Briefly: Glider pilot loses lift, lands short of airport

ARLINGTON -- A 66-year-old pilot walked away from his glider early Sunday evening after having to land in a field short of the Arlington Airport, officials said.

"He ran out of lift," said Christine Badger, a city of Arlington spokeswoman. "He looked for some place to land safely. He knew he wasn't going to make it to the airport."

The man was taken by a private car to Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington to be checked out as a precaution, Badger said. His glider clipped some trees and sustained damage during the landing in an Agri-Turf Soil Farm field operated just south of the airport, she said.

It was the second straight day a glider had to land in the field shy of the airport, Badger said.

On Saturday afternoon, a 54-year-old man landed there, too, she said. He was uninjured.

Lynnwood: Armed robber strikes at Joe's

An armed man robbed the Joe's Store at 196th Street SW and Highway 99 in Lynnwood about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a Lynnwood Police Department report.

The man with a scarf over his face was armed with a rifle or shotgun, police said.

Before taking the money, he ordered everyone to the ground in the tent section of the parking lot of the store, formerly known as G.I. Joe's, police said.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic man in his mid to late 20s. He fled in a car driven by another man.

Index: Motorcycle crash victim named

A motorcyclist killed Saturday night in a traffic accident on U.S. 2 near Index has been identified as Michael D. Wallace, 50, of Monroe. He died at the scene, according to Washington State Patrol reports.

The accident occurred about 7 p.m. when an eastbound pickup rear-ended a car that had stopped to turn across the highway into a pullout. The impact pushed the car across the centerline, where it collided with the oncoming motorcycle, according to reports.
