Boise halts AquaSox winning streak
Herald staff
BOISE -- Two steps forward, one step back.
One day after Everett completed a three-game sweep of Salem-Keizer to surge within a game of first place in the Northwest League's West Division, the AquaSox lost a see-saw battle with the Boise Hawks, 9-6, at Memorial Stadium on Sunday night.
Boise's Andrew Rundle hit a go-ahead RBI triple in the seventh innning, Kyler Burke added an insurance home run in the eighth and Boise scored three runs in the last two innings to pull away.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Everett and dropped the AquaSox to 15-18 on the season. Salem-Keizer defeated Spokane Sunday to extend its lead over the AquaSox.
Clinging to a 5-3 advantage in the sixth inning, Everett's bullpen couldn't hold on.
Boise sent eight batters to the plate in the inning, loaded the bases twice, and Everett relievers Robbie Dominguez, Erik Averill, and Eddy Fernandez combined to issue four walks while surrendering three runs to let the Hawks back into the game.
Everett rallied to tie the game at 6-6 in the seventh, but the AquaSox never led again.
The loss spoiled an impressive hitting performance by Luis Nunez, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI, a double, and two runs scored. Kevin Reynolds also had two RBI on 2-for-4 batting.
Boise was led by Josh Harrison, who drove in two runs in the sixth and finished with three RBI on 2-for-5 batting.
But it was Rundle's RBI triple that broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Hawks the lead for good. After Burke hit his solo home run to open the eighth inning, Boise began to pull away.
The Hawks jumped out early, tagging Everett starter Walter Suriel for six hits, including four doubles, to take a 3-0 lead after two innings.
But Everett answered back in the third, scoring two runs on back-to-back doubles by Nunez and Reynolds.
After a scoreless fourth, Everett scored three more runs in the fifth inning to make it 5-3.
Boise catcher Michael Brenly was knocked out of the game in the second inning after being hit by a foul ball. The Hawks' designated hitter Carlos Perez switched to catcher to finish the game.
