SILVANA -- For many kids, Saturday's Silvana Fair marks the start of the fair season in Snohomish County.

The community event attracts many 4-H members who show their pets and livestock, with hopes of going on to participate in the Stanwood-Camano Fair, the Evergreen State Fair or the Puyallup Fair.

For some, the little one-day fair is the highlight of the summer, and every child who participates gets a ribbon, said spokeswoman Kathy Larson.

Exhibits of animals, produce horticulture and sewing also are planned, along with displays of antique tractors, craft booths and plenty of food, Larson said.

She recommends the hamburgers and ice cream sold by the Silvana Fire Department -- and the 4-H booth fried potatoes aren't too bad, either.

"It's a great family event and we're expecting a good turnout," Larson said.

That's the payoff, she said, because the amount of work that goes into putting on the annual community fair is great.

The work continues this week when fair officials accept exhibits to be judged at the fair.

Those who plan to enter the fair can submit their baked goods, produce, flowers, sewing, and arts and crafts from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Viking Hall.

"It's a wonderful event for the kids," Larson said.
