Contact Carol MacPherson (cmacpherson@heraldnet.com or 425-339-3472).   Published: Tuesday, July 22, 2008 I-5 Trouble happening at Marine View exit As the summer wears on, I see the skid marks in the Marine View Drive Exit Only lane of I-5 northbound get longer and darker. I take this exit every evening to get home and it is often the topic of my conversation when I walk through the door. The exit is not working properly and it is a dangerous spot on the road. The basic problem seems to be there isn't enough distance for drivers to merge onto the freeway before they are caught on the Marine View exit only lane. Those entering the roadway are actually two lanes that to come together quickly at the on ramp. These drivers realize they will have to exit if they don't get over so they stop right in the exit lane and wait for traffic to let them in. This stopping is problematic for the many aggressive drivers who use this lane as a way to cut to the head of the line. The exit only lane begins long before it is needed and so it sits open and is hard to resist I guess. Inevitably the bypassers get jammed in behind those who are legitimately trying to merge because they also have come to the end of the line before the exit. The surface area by the exit is wide so exiting drivers, trapped behind those merging, often swing out onto the shoulder to get around and make the exit and that is where it gets really dangerous. This isn't meant to be a commentary on bad drivers because from what I've observed, people are mostly confused. I know the flow at the on-ramp and off-ramp was tested, studied and analyzed but we need more signage indicating merging traffic, do not pass, caution or something. Annique Bennett Everett
