On ripped thumbs and sore shoulders

Posted at 2:31 pm by By Kirby Arnold

There's a new patient on the Mariners' medical report -- catcher Jeff Clement, who probably won't play until Saturday at the earliest because of a thumb injury.

Clement tore the nail and suffered a pretty good bruise Tuesday night on a freak play at the backstop. He was chasing a pop foul in the second inning and grabbed the netting with his bare hand. As the ball dropped just inches away -- but on the other side of the backstop -- it hit the tip of his right thumb. It bent back the nail and split it but didn't tear it off as was reported Tuesday night.

Manager Jim Riggleman said Clement can swing a bat but can't throw. With an off day Thursday and a left-hander starting for the Blue Jays on Friday, manager Jim Riggleman said Clement probably wouldn' t play again until Saturday.

As for the other injured Mariner of note, pitcher Erik Bedard, Riggleman said the left-hander was feeling relieved that the MRI Tuesday didn't show any structural damage to his shoulder. There's still no timetable on Bedard's return, or even when he'll begin throwing again. It's a certainty that Bedard won't pitch before Aug. 1.
