Officials talked to the man’s girlfriend this afternoon, Snohomish County sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Rochon said this afternoon. She had talked to the man and he said he was lost but otherwise OK. Now, search teams are hoping the man quits moving and stays still, Rochon said. “We can find you if you sit still. We can’t find a moving target,” he said. The man, 28, apparently lost his map and was navigating using a compass and global positioning system. He’s believed to be at the 7,000-foot level of the volcanic peak, which stands at about 10,500 feet in eastern Snohomish County. Earlier in the day, a U.S. Navy helicopter joined the search. Once it was learned the man wasn’t in distress, that chopper returned to base, Rochon said. Glacier Peak is remote, located about 50 miles east of Everett, and is noted for its long hiking trails. Earlier today, the man activated an emergency beacon which summoned help, Rochon said. A helicopter from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office was trying to locate the man and rescue him. If the chopper is unable to hoist him to safety, ground crews are standing by to hike in, Rochon said.
