CHILDREN'S THEATER

Prudent to explore all other options

Before our city leaders spend over a million dollars to build a new children's theater, I hope they've considered all the options. I wonder why taxpayers need to build classrooms for the Village Theatre's Kidstage program in the old Key Bank building when upscale classrooms are being built just across the street for a new college in the former Bon Marche building. Why can't the Village Theatre partner with the college to create a top-notch learning environment for kids? There are also plenty of modern classrooms available for lease in the Federal Building on Colby Avenue, just a few blocks away.

If the Village Theatre absolutely must have its own building for the Kidspace program, why not purchase the Everett Symphony's existing headquarters, which is just a hop, skip and a jump away from the Performing Arts Center? The Everett Symphony will soon be leaving this location to take up residence in the Historic Everett Theatre. Benefactors of the Village Theatre can raise the funds to purchase the building and feel even better knowing that their donations will also support the Everett Symphony. Unlike the Key Bank building, the symphony's existing headquarters already has office and performance space that has been brought up to current building codes.

I'd like to think that city leaders and Village Theatre officials have also considered partnering with other downtown organizations such as the YMCA or Historic Everett Theatre to provide extra space for the Kidstage program. Doing so could result in a win-win solution for the programs involved, but also a win for taxpayers who are feeling pinched by higher costs in a slowing economy.

In her July 19 guest commentary, council member Brenda Stonecipher said, "All's Well that Ends Well." When it comes to safeguarding our tax dollars, let's hope she means it.
