SPORTS REPORTING

Where is coverage of softball champs?

As a lifetime resident of Snohomish County, I am surprised and disappointed in the 1960s sexist reporting of sports that The Herald has exhibited this week. Last Friday, the Stilly Valley Major Girls Softball team won the state title for the third consecutive year, advancing to the regional tournament in Vancouver, Wash., this Friday. There has been no coverage of this accomplishment until Tuesday, buried on the third page of the sports section in "community roundup."

In stark contrast is the boy's state Majors Championship being held in Mill Creek. This event, even though the local team has not won yet, graced the front page of the sports section on Friday, the front page of the Local section on Saturday and again, the front page of the sports section on Monday. I truly hope the Mill Creek boys advance to the regional tournament as this group of girls has done. It is a great experience and achievement that deserves equal media coverage for both boys and girls!
