The sale of handcrafted scarves, necklaces, tablecloths and other goods is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 523 Main St. Only cash will be accepted at the sale. Proceeds go to the Here je Center, a center in the West African country of Mali where impoverished women learn skills such as beading, weaving and printing. They also get training in health, reading, family planning and conflict resolution. Carol Schillios, a member of the Edmonds Rotary Club, helped found the Here je Center. Everett Fred Meyer grants benefit 5 nonprofits Five nonprofit groups based in Everett recently were awarded $8,890 in grants by the Fred Meyer Fund of Portland, Ore. The Cocoon House, a shelter for homeless teens, was given $2,500 for workbooks, educational videos, transportation and other costs. Everett Public Schools-Special Services was given $1,000 for interactive books. The First Presbyterian Church of Everett was awarded $1,500 for the Dinner at the Bell program. The Forest View Elementary School PTA was given $1,890 for a climbing structure in its playground. The Simon of Cyrene Society of Monroe was granted $2,000 for its food pantry. In all, the Fred Meyer Fund announced $208,400 in grants to Washington nonprofit groups during this six-month grant cycle. The fund has awarded more than $9 million in grants since its inception in 1997. Lake Stevens Book sale planned during Aquafest The Friends of the Lake Stevens Library is holding a book sale today through Sunday. The sale is noon to 8 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday on the boardwalk outside the library, 1804 Main St. The sale coincides with Aquafest, the city's main summer festival. Books are $1 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks. Proceeds will go to supplement services at the Lake Stevens Library, primarily providing funding for children's events and programs.
