Three employees received the George F. Shuh awards, the college's highest honor. The the Shuh family created the award to honor George Shuh, who died in 2003. His daughter Bette Shuh and son Tom Shuh presented this year's awards. Sandra Lepper, an art instructor, received the Shuh award for her role in the growth of Everett Community College's art department and for curating this year's "Catalyst" art show in the newly renamed Russell Day Gallery. Marc Tolle, EvCC's interim director of security, was named a Shuh winner for his professionalism and dedication to campus security. Jeff Pearce, human resources consultant, received the Shuh award for being an outstanding advocate for EvCC. The Everett Community College's Diversity Award was presented to the college's diversity teaching lab, which was created in 2006 by Paul Marshall, teaching and learning cooperative coordinator and Janice Lovelace, diversity and equity center counselor. Extra effort awards were presented to Sharon Shuhow, staff services copy center lead; Rebecca Mathis, program coordinator; Stu Barger, interim dean of nursing; and Bobbie Nelson and Bev Nunes, enrollment services. Nine EvCC faculty members were named Exceptional Faculty for 2008, including Jo-Ann Sickles, communications instructor; Anne Brackett, chemistry instructor; Joyce Walker, humanities instructor; Elliot Stern, biology instructor; Bill Reed, accounting instructor; and Christine Wilson, Kathryn Johnson, Dale Galloway and Patricia Nerison, reading and study skills instructors. Two awards were presented to Everett Community College classified staff. Jacob Steelsmith, information technology specialist, won the Emerging Classified Staff award. Ronna DeLaVergne, nursing and health sciences administrative assistant, was named the Distinguished Classified Staff award winner. EvCC students also honored the following staff with "You Made a Difference" awards: Andrea Cahan, math instructor; Elizabeth "Betsy" Stam, medical transcription instructor; Theresa Markovich, business technology instructor and Karen Preston, nursing program coordinator. The winners were nominated by EvCC graduates who sent descriptions of how a person from the college's faculty, staff or administration had made a difference in their lives. Principals' association honors teachers, community The Washington Association of School Principals Sno-Isle Region No. 109 recently honored outstanding educators and individuals who have made contributions to K-12 education. District award recipients were: Brett Sarver, Arlington High School career and technical education director, who received the Arlington Public Schools Student Achievement Leadership Award. Sarver has been a teacher and a career and technical education director in the Arlington School District since 1992. Sarver was instrumental in starting one of the first Microsoft Network Certification programs at the high school level in the nation. Sarver has also been responsible for generating funds to purchase specialized equipment including a top-of-the line CAD software program. Kristy Ewell, a volunteer, received the Community Leadership Award. Ewell has served at each school her children have attended, beginning at Eagle Creek Elementary School when her oldest daughter entered kindergarten twelve years ago. Ewell has served on the Arlington Public Schools Advisory Council for Education and been involved in the parent teacher association and booster club. She also volunteered in the music and drama programs at Arlington High School. Granite Falls School District: Student Achievement, Doug McNeill; Community Leadership: Siobhan Sullivan. Index School District: Student Achievement, Linda Boyle; Community Leadership, Bill Hoffman and Leonard Cheever with the Monroe Fire Department No. 3 vehicle maintenance department. Lake Stevens School District: Student Achievement, Robert Manahan; Community Leadership, Randy Celori. Lakewood School District: Student Achievement, Katie Waldrop; Community Leadership, Tara Mizell. Marysville School District: Student Achievement, Gail Miller; Community Leadership, JJ Frank. Monroe School District: Student Achievement, Sandi Conley; Community Leadership, Monroe Police Department. Mukilteo School District: Student Achievement, Ali Williams, Nikki Cannon, Nancy Coogan, Wes Bailey, Linda Mueller, Keith Rittel and Brent Kline; Community Leadership, Tania Halladay, Leita Garside and Sue Davis. WASA Sno-Isle 109 Regional Awards: Student Achievement Leadership, Gail Miller and Award of Merit, Mary Stine. Marysville lodge awards scholarships Marysville's Mille Cugine Lodge No. 2659, Order of Sons of Italy in America, recently awarded five scholarships worth $250 each to children or grandchildren of local lodge members. Coco Giacolino, president of Marysville Sons of Italy Lodge, presented the scholarship certificates. Two of the recipients attended the scholarship presentation. They were: Michael Gange and Alan Butner, recent graduates of Marysville High School. Gange is the son of Robert and Susan Gange of Marysville. Butner is the son of Lori and Jeff Butner of Marysville and also the grandson of Jeanne and Ben VanDam of Lake Stevens. The other scholarship winners were represented by their parents. Christina Del Grosso, daughter of member Ron Del Grosso of Lake Stevens, and Gina Dellino, daughter of David Dellino and Rebecca Jacoby, daughter of Paula Jacoby, received scholarships. Dellino and Jacoby are also the granddaughters of lodge members Mary and Frank Dellino. Mukilteo grad achieves perfect attendance Jordan Keller, a recent Kamiak High School graduate, finished 13 years of school with a perfect attendance record. During school, Keller coached a volleyball team, played volleyball and basketball, participated in track and attended four advance placement classes her senior year. Keller set the goal to have a perfect attendance record in kindergarten. By graduation, she had completed 2,334 days of school without an absence. Keller plans to attend Seattle University in the Fall, where she'll play volleyball on a four-year scholarship.
