Layoffs big (Weyerhauser) and small (MDRNA, Inc.) clouding state economy

Washington’s economy may be holding up well compared to the rest of the nation but it is far from booming.
Weyerhauser Co. of Federal Way announced this morning it is
eliminating 1,500 jobs
following a very difficult last three months.
MDRNA, Inc., a struggling Bothell biotech firm
is letting 23 people go,
including its president.
The news comes as Gov. Chris Gregoire
on Monday ordered a hiring freeze,
curb in unnecessary out-of-state travel and cut back in fuel use in most state agencies to offset a decline in tax collections by the state.
