Riggleman tells Silva to pipe down

If Carlos Silva intended to draw a response with his postgame rant to reporters Friday night, he did.

With manager Jim Riggleman.

One day after Silva called out unnamed position players for not playing their best, Riggleman voiced his displeasure with the rotund right-hander.

"He shouldn't have said it to the writers," Riggleman said. "He should have said it to me, he should have said it to the teammate he's directing it at. I'm going to talk to him and a couple other guys. He said the starting pitchers are focused but some other people aren't. That's ridiculous."

Silva's record fell to 4-13 in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Rays and afterward he criticized teammates -- he wouldn't name anyone -- for playing selfishly.

"I don't care if we are 40 games behind, we should play better than this," he said. "I can talk about the starting rotation. Every time we cross the line we want to do our best no matter how many games we are behind.

"Maybe half of the team doesn't have that mentality. Their only thing is to finish strong (individually) and put up numbers. That's great, but that affects us, you know. As a team, that doesn't work out. You never want to be in this position, especially for us as pitchers."

Riggleman said Silva's complaints didn't make sense to him.

"I'm very disappointed," Riggleman said. "When I hear somebody say something about selfish play, I challenge anyone to go in there and look at the tape of every game from March 31 to the present time and show me an example of somebody being selfish. I'll stand corrected if somebody points it out, but if you say someone is selfish you've got to show me something specific."

Riggleman said the insinuation that the Mariners are selfish and don't do the little things that are important to an offense isn't true.

"We do the little things," he said. "It's the big things. We're not hitting good enough and we're not pitching good enough. If somebody wants to hide behind, 'Oh, we made a baserunning mistake,' or 'We didn't move the runner over,' or use the word 'selfish,' you can try to act like that's the problem right there. That will make up those 30 games.

"But you've got to hit better and pitch better."

Another step for Bedard: Ailing starting pitcher Erik Bedard threw off flat ground Saturday afternoon, making 60 throws of about 80 feet. He will throw again today in what now is a two-days-on, one-day-off program.

"It was a definite improvement from the last couple of times he's throw," pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said. "He's feeling good. He's just playing catch, but it's at least something."

Bedard has been on the disabled list since July 5 because of tightness in his left sholder.

The Morrow plan: Stottlemyre said Brandon Morrow, now playing for Class AAA Tacoma to be converted into a starting pitcher, will throw about 50 pitches when he starts Monday.

"We hope to jump 15 pitches each time until he gets around 85 to 100," Stottlemyre said.

Barring any setbacks, that would have Morrow ready to start for the Mariners close to the end of August at the earliest.
