Hokey-pokey your way to a world record

Posted at 12:01 am by Katie Mayer, Herald staff

If all this Olympic fervor makes you wish you could set a world record, now's your chance. On Aug. 31, you can join an attempt to set a Guinness record for the largest number of people performing the hokey-pokey at once. But if it's been a while since you put your backside in and shook it all about, consider practicing first. You wouldn't want to be the one who got the effort disqualified because the Guinness people thought you were doing the macarena.

Mark your calendar: Tickets for Neil Young's concert in Everett go on sale Sept. 12. We've heard he puts on a good show, but we won't really be impressed until we find out someone has trained the spider named after Young to play guitar with him on "Heart of Gold."

I'm borrrred: An expert advises parents not to fear those words. Instead, she says, encourage creativity by having kids play by themselves, starting with short periods of 10 minutes or so. That's just the right amount of time for them to creatively cure their boredom by covering the living room in toilet paper, but not long enough to turn the back yard into a lake with the garden hose.

No joke: Residents of a small town in Missouri can manage their financial affairs at Tightwad Bank. The population of Tightwad is a mere 63, possibly because no one could get a home loan.
