The results indicate that Lucas is edging out Hulbert by a little more than 2,300 votes in the race to keep his seat on the bench. Meanwhile in the second contested county judicial race, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor George Appel is leading in the three-way battle to the bench. Appel is leading private attorney Joe Wilson by less than 2,000 votes. Jim Johanson, a private attorney and former state legislator, is third in the pack. He is trailing Wilson by about 9,500 votes in the early returns. The attorneys are vying to replace longtime Superior Court Judge Richard Thorpe, who is expected to retire at the end of the year. Approximately 78,000 votes have been counted. That’s about 22 percent of the 351,000 issued ballots.
