Top Foods raises $3,970 for food bank

Employees at the Snohomish Top Foods recently raised $3,970 with the sale of bratwurst over the Fourth of July weekend, which was donated to the Snohomish Community Food Bank.

Senior volunteers honored by Mayor

Catholic Community Services recently honored 45 of its volunteers from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program or RSVP, at a recognition event at the Everett Senior Center. Everett Mayor Ray Stephenson; Vicki Howell, chief of operations for Catholic Community Services Snohomish County and Karen McGhaghy, director of the Everett Senior Center were on hand to present the awards. The RSVP program helps people older than 55 find meaningful volunteer opportunities in their communities.

Service group awards eleven scholarships

The Improved Order of Redmen recently awarded 11 students scholarships worth $1,000 each at a dinner in Everett. The students live in Sultan, Lake Stevens, Marysville, Everett, Langley and Seattle.

Kyle Heiser and Marissa Lyons both received scholarships but were unable to attend the dinner.

Restaurant group helps senior facility

A team of about a dozen Everett Olive Garden employees recently worked at the courtyards at Bethany at Silver Lake as part of their community service project. The employees planted low-maintenance vegetation, plants and flowers, re-finished three benches around the courtyard fountain, added dirt and bark around flower beds and trimmed bushes.

Patrick Mallahan, a senior who lives at Bethany at Silver Lake, said he thought the work was nice and he would enjoy it.

Bethany at Silver Lake is a skilled nursing facility in South Everett near Mill Creek and Bothell.

Assistance League honors volunteer

The Assistance League of Everett recently awarded Sally Joy of Mukilteo the Ada Edwards Laughlin Award. The award honors a long-time member who has contributed many hours of volunteer work behind the scenes and is considered an "unsung hero."

In addition to other efforts, Joy has assisted with Operation School Bell, a program that provides clothes to low-income children in Snohomish County. Joy has also helped with Assisteens, a teen auxiliary of the league, which helps young people become involved in volunteer work.

Joy has been a member of league for 12 years.

Scout's computer collection a success

Cullen Walsh, a student at Kamiak High School, recently organized a computer collection event at Kamiak High School for his Eagle Scout project. The event resulted in the collection of 242 computers, 264 monitors, 137 printers, 14 laptops and 30 scanners. Walsh plans to donate the equipment to the nonprofit organization InterConnection in Seattle, which plans to provide the equipment to schools, nonprofit agencies and low-income people in the Seattle area and in developing countries.

Snohomish student raises $1,400

Adam Heike, 17, a student at Snohomish High School and an Eagle Scout candidate from Scout Troop No. 288 in Snohomish, recently raised $1,400 in donations and supplies for a community service project he organized called the Tender Loving Care for Zion Lutheran Cemetery project.

Adam led a day-long work party at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Snohomish where he and a crew of volunteers replaced four broken headstones, righted two monument stones, replaced a broken vehicle gate, added a pedestrian gate, poured concrete for a sidewalk, weeded and placed bark along a 200-foot hedge bed and marked and poured concrete for plot markings for 128 new graves.

The Snohomish TOP Foods, McDaniel's Do-It Center and many local citizens contributed cash and supplies for the project.

Children's museum a Nickelodeon winner

Everett's Imagine Children's Museum recently was selected as Seattle's 2008 Parents' Picks for Best Museum as part of Nickelodeon's ParentsConnect's Parents' Picks Awards.

The museum, which opened its doors in a new 40,000-square-foot facility in 2004, was nominated for the award along with Seattle's Experience Music Project, the Museum of Flight and the Seattle Children's Museum.

Lichneckert is also one of the few youth in the nation to have completed Kodiak X training. District awards also went to: Jeremy Makin, who served as skipper of the SSS Kelcema and on the Wood Badge staff and as course director for the 2008 Western Region Sea Badge Course and to Peter Self, who has worked behind-the-scenes to help organize Venturing courses, including Kodiak, Powder Horn and Venturepaloozas, and who has also served as a volunteer crew adviser.
