CARNIVAL

The Monroe Covenant Church hosts a free carnival from 1 to 4 p.m. today following the Evergreen State Fair parade at 202 South Sams St., Monroe. Organizers plan to offer free food, face painting, games, a bounce house, live music and other activities.

Bethany Christian Assembly kicks off a series of Wednesday "Life Seminars" at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 at 2715 Everett Ave., Everett.

Seminar topics include "I Love You More: How Everyday Problems Can Strengthen Your Marriage" and "Basic Christian Beliefs." The seminars are designed to help people in everyday life and focus on parenting, marriage and more for new believers.

Maribeth Carson, pastoral assistant for faith formation, plans to present "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults" from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Sept. 18. During the program, Carson plans to explore the Catholic faith, answering such questions as: "What do Catholics believe and why?" "How do I become a Catholic?" and "If I was baptized in another religion, do I have to be re-baptized?"

Classes will be held at the parish hall at St. Mary Magdalen Parish, 8717 Seventh Ave. SE, Everett and at St. John Mission, 829 Third St., Mukilteo.

CONCERTS

KCMS radio SPIRIT 105.3 FM presents Spirit Fest '08 with Jars of Clay and Leeland Sunday at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe.

Jars of Clay sings hits such as "Flood," "Good Monsters" and "Dead Man."

The opening band, Leeland, has been nominated for a Grammy Award for best pop-contemporary gospel album and four Dove Award nominations. Leeland's latest album "Opposite Way" combines the musical influences of Travis, Coldplay, David Gray and U2.

Tickets, $15 to $35, are available through Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com.

Tickets purchased prior to day of show include fair admission.

A Gathering Grove, a bookstore featuring spiritual books of all religions, presents a weekend of music, starting with Pagasys, a progressive rock-jazz band from 6 to 8 p.m. today and Rupert Wates, a contemporary acoustic artist, from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at 2820 Oakes Ave., Everett.

Canyon Hills Community Church wraps up its summer concert series with the group Rend the Heavens from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with a barbecue dinner from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m. at 22027 17th Ave. SE, Bothell.

The concert is free. Bounce houses will be set up for kids.

Sonrise Chapel and the Casino Road Stakeholder Group present the second annual Start Out Right back-to-school event from 8 a.m. to noon today at South Everett Foursquare Church, 206 E. Casino Road, Everett.

A family fun festival is set for 2 to 6 p.m. at Walter E. Hall Park, 1226 W. Casino Road, Everett.

At the Start Out Right event, organizers expect to hand out more than 500 free backpacks with school supplies -- twice as many as last year.

The event includes a free pancake breakfast, live music, kids' activities and crafts. Contributing businesses include Fred Meyer, Maverick, Northwest Aerospace, Staples, Target and WalMart.

The afternoon family fun fest features bounce houses, live rap music and family-friendly activities.

PROGRAMS

Kadampa Meditation Center presents "Taking and Giving," its final meditation class in a recent series, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at Anabel's Framing and Gallery, 2531 Broadway, Everett.

The class focuses on using the practice of taking and giving, considered a powerful meditation technique for improving and stabilizing love and compassion for others. Classes include guided meditations, teachings, discussion and refreshments. Drop-ins are welcome. The cost is $10 per class, $5 for students, seniors or people with low incomes.
