Special events

A Career and College Fair for young people will be held Oct. 8 in the Comcast Arena, 2000 Hewitt Ave., Everett. Students only will be admitted for school trips from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the open session is from 2 to 6 p.m. It will include some 100 exhibitors from universities, community colleges, career train programs, trade and apprenticeship programs, businesses and industry. The Whidbey Island Writers Association presents its First Saturday at the Mukilteo Garage Writers Series from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Mukilteo Garage, 807 2nd St. in Mukilteo. Wayne Ude will present "Who are The People: An Exploration of Character and Characterization," a seven-hour class that will explore what characters are, ways characters may be represented, and approaches to creating characters. There will be a one-hour break for lunch. This first of four monthly writers workshops offers opportunities to improve one's writing craft, find new inspiration and meet other local writers. The Boeing Co. has added a new exhibit at the Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour to allow visitors to provide feedback on jet interiors. The company will use the information from the 20-minute tour to help design the how new jets should look and feel inside. The interior exhibit will be offered until Oct. 15 at the center, which is located at 8415 Paine Field Blvd. Cost is $15 for adults.

Ensuring your company isn't stuck with a brain drain as baby boomers get ready to retire is one of the issues that will be addressed in October by the Snohomish County Human Resources Association. The group will meet from 8:30 a.m. until noon on Oct. 23 at the Holiday Inn, 3105 Pine St., Everett. Watson Wyatt Worldwide will present the work force planning session aimed at helping businesses plan for the future. Cost is $75 for members and $100 for nonmembers. Alliance Nursing, a Woodinville-based company since 1989, will have an open house of its fourth group home, located in Snohomish, from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. The home provides residency for up to six adults who require skilled nursing care around the clock, and features a more family-oriented environment to allow living in a community-based setting. Dream Dinners based in Snohomish is offering $500 gift certificates for guests whose favorite recipes are selected for a March 2009 menu. It's the second year the company, which has customers assemble the ingredients for meals they cook at home, has held the contest. The event will be held from Sept. 1 to Oct. 15. Recipes will be selected in the categories of steak, chicken, pork and seafood, and one winner will be selected in each category.

The Aerospace Futures Alliance of Washington will hold its second annual aerospace summit from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the conference center at the Comcast Arena, 200 Hewitt Ave., in Everett. Classes

Edmonds Community College is offering a new associate degree in aerospace manufacturing. Classes in lean manufacturing will be offered this fall toward the degree. They can also be taken on their own. The class will teach manufacturing methods often called the Toyota production system. Tim Vilyus, an electrical engineer from Bay Village, Ohio, was the grand prize winner in the "We've Got You Covered" Sweepstakes offered by Everett's Fluke Corp. Vilyus was selected in a random drawing from among thousands who participated in the nationwide sweepstakes, offered through authorized Fluke distributors and online between March 1 and May 31. Vilyus received $40,000 in cash.
