Edmonds man dies in rollover accident

LYNNWOOD -- An Edmonds man died early Sunday in a rollover accident south of Martha Lake.

Police units were called to 164th Street SW near Seventh Place W. about 2:40 a.m., Snohomish County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said in a press release.

The vehicle was headed east on 164th Street SW when it apparently lost control and rolled on its top, she said.

The 23-year-old driver died at the scene. His passenger, a 22-year-old Poulsbo man, was hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, she said.

Hover said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The incident is under investigation, Hover said.

Bob Brewer, who lives off 164th Street SW, said he walked out of his house at 6 a.m. after he saw lights and activity on the road.

Brewer said the power at his house had been off and he thought crews were working on the power lines.

Instead, he said, he saw a black vehicle, an SUV or a truck, lying on its side by the side of the road, facing north.

Brewer said the driver's side was pushed against the fire hydrant.

"The top, the sides, everything was dashed in like it had been rolling over," Brewer said.

Brewer said the vehicle must have rolled several times.

Light-colored clothes were scattered around the car, he said.

Brewer said he saw two trucks cleaning up the scene, and a tow truck to pull the vehicle back up on its wheels.

By the time Cris Benefiel came out to the side of the road Sunday afternoon, nothing showed of the fatal accident.

Benefiel, who lives by the lake, said she heard the sirens about 3 a.m. The power at her house had been off as well.

She said she was looking for things that would help her figure out what happened, such as tape or broken glass.

"I went out here looking for remnants," she said.

Benefiel said she had found things like that before, since several accidents have happened in the area in the past.
