Everett

Barbecue planned for Casino Road families

The Islamic Center of Everett plans to host its annual open house and barbecue on Saturday at its mosque at 818 W. Casino Road in Everett.

The neighborhood and anyone else who is interested is welcome to attend. The center has hosted the daylong barbecue each August for several years.

Paving project will smooth over I-5 ruts

Drivers who are tired of driving on rutted roads on southbound I-5 between the Stillaguamish River and Smokey Point should know that help is on the way.

State transportation officials are currently designing a project that will repave that stretch of freeway, which traffic experts estimate to be more than 15 years old. Onramps and offramps at Highway 530 will also be repaved, as well as lanes into the north- and southbound Smokey Point rest areas, which serve an estimated 1 million people each year.

Construction on the $4.5 million project is scheduled to begin next summer.

Marysville

New activities guide shows fall, winter events

The city of Marysville's Parks and Recreation Department has released its Fall-Winter activities guide. The guide was mailed to Marysville-area homes last week. It includes information on classes, activities and special community news.

The guide can be downloaded at www.ci.marysville.wa.us. The Web site also provides a registration form available for download.

Lawn watering guide encourages conservation

Marysville residents are still encouraged to carefully monitor how much water they use to water lawns and other outdoor features.

A 2008 Summer Lawn Watering Calendar is available through the city's Web site at www.ci.marysville.wa.us. The calendar began in June, and continues through the end of September. It offers a guideline that staggers lawn watering between city residents.

More info: 360-363-8100.

Chamber welcomes military families

The Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce is in the last stage of a countywide initiative to ensure that Snohomish County is as welcoming as possible to military families.

The organization is now working to create a countywide registry of military family-friendly employers.

Businesses throughout the county are asked to contact the chamber to find out how to be listed in the registry.

Stanwood

Town to get Amtrak station in summer 2009

Amtrak passenger trains will stop at a new station in Stanwood next summer.

The Washington State Legislature voted in 2006 to give $5 million to the state Department of Transportation to build a train station in Stanwood. Construction on the station could begin as early as October.

The station will be a stopping point for Amtrak's Cascade service, which travels up and down the West Coast. Amtrak trains are expected to stop in Stanwood a total of four times each day.
