Tips sign Murray (updated with cuts)

Posted at 11:08 am by Nick Patterson

The Tips today announced they've signed this year's first-round bantam pick, defenseman Ryan Murray, to a WHL education contract.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the process, what signing an education contract does is basically affirm the mutual commitment between player and team. Murray commits to playing for Everett when the Tips deem he's ready, and the Tips commit to paying for a year of college for each year Murray plays for Everett.

This is no surprise as Murray said after the draft he was committed to playing in the WHL. This just makes it official.

Anyway, the fifth annual Everett Silvertips Preseason Tournament begins tomorrow. Here's the game schedule:

FRIDAY
Chilliwack vs. Seattle, 11:30 am
Portland vs. Tri-City, 3:00 pm
Everett vs. Spokane, 7:00 pm

SATURDAY
Tri-City vs. Chilliwack, 11:30 am
Spokane vs. Portland, 3:00 pm
Everett vs. Seattle, 7:00 pm

SUNDAY
Tri-City vs. Spokane, 11:30 am
Portland vs. Seattle, 3:00 pm
Everett vs. Chilliwack, 7:00 pm

--- UPDATE 12:15 p.m.

The Tips made a second round of cuts in advance of this weekend's tournament. Forwards Cameron Gibson, Paul Grenier, D.Jay McGrath and Nathan Murray, and defensemen Martin Turgeon, Paul Janzen, Ryan Murray and Michael Berry were released from camp, bringing the roster total down to 27. Needless to say, Ryan Murray's signing didn't equate to him getting into a game this weekend. Anyway, here's where the roster stands:

Goaltenders (2): Shayne Barrie (89), Kent Simpson (92).
Defensmen (10): Taylor Ellington (88), Graham Potuer (88), Mike Alexander (89), Tyler Kieffer (89), Chris de la Lande (90), Brenden Stephen (90), Drew McDermott (91), Jeff Regier (91), Paul Sohor (91), Gabriel Minville (92).
Forwards (15): Jesse Burt (89) Zack Dailey (89), Shane Harper (89), Kyle Beach (90), Matt Ius (90), Jordan Mistelbacher (90), Tyler Skauge (90), Paul Van de Velde (90), Cameron Abney (91), Byron Froese (91), Tyler Maxwell (91), Kellan Tochkin (91), Ryan White (91), Markus McCrea (92), Tyler Parker (92).

There will eventuall be four or five more cuts, but with Ellington, Beach and Mistelbacher headed off to NHL camps right about when the season starts, it might not be until after the season's underway that the majority of those cuts are made.

Nick's blog coverage this weekend
Since it was asked, I thought I'd let you readers know that for this weekend's games I plan on doing my usual postgame blog box, the same one I did for the regular season games last season. We'll see if I remember how to do it (hey, we sportswriters need preseason tuning up, too).

Hey Nick...
Are you attending all of the Tips games this weekend? Hope so, we want to get your full wrap up of the action 'cause many of us can't be there.

And speaking of covearge, ask Rosen why he's not broadcasting this weekend! lol

Goal scoring is definitely going to be an issue for Everett this season. Other than Kyle Beach and Shane Harper no returning Everett player scored more than 10 goals last season. Jordan Mistelbacher and Matt Ius will need to increase their production substantially, and some of the 91-born forwards are going to need to produce immediately. Otherwise the goal lamp might not get much of a workout this season.

would love to know what set those two off. wondering if jordan was just trying to remind kyle that someone has to watch his back and maybe kyle should buy dinner once in a while. and in typical kyle fashion. well.... and please tell me how this team scores a 150 goals this year. just too much firepower gone.

Keep in mind the Tips have just two overagers right now and will most likely add a third, probably a forward. And the players who don't make the team have to find a place to play this season, too. It's hard to hold onto a player for an extended period, then find him the ideal playing situation at a lower level after those teams have already set their rosters.

keep 25 until the dust settles
I think the Tips should keep the maximum (25?) until everything is settled - Are Beach & Ellington coming back? Will they get to the maximum of Overagers? Go with 2 goalies, 8 defensemen and 15 forwards...
