Web site helps kindergartners

The Department of Early Learning has created a new kindergarten readiness Web site section for parents at www.del.wa.gov/ development/kindergarten. The Web site includes suggestions for classroom visits, tips for parents to help prepare their child for school and links to health, nutrition and child development information.

Gas card raffle ends Sunday

EquiFriends Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program in Snohomish presents a gas card raffle with tickets sold until Sunday. Organizers plan to give away three gas cards worth $300, $200 and $100. The drawing is set to take place Monday. Raffle tickets are $2 and can be purchased individually or in books of 10. Proceeds from the raffle are slated to help offset student-related costs at EquiFriends programs. For more information, call 425-377-0802.

Oak Harbor group offers fruit, veggies

The Oak Harbor Lions Club offers Wenatchee-grown fruit and vegetables from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at their yellow trailer in the Rite Aid parking lot, 31645 Highway 20, Oak Harbor. Sun-ripened freestone peaches, nectarines, beefsteak and Roma tomatoes, cantaloupes, pears, Walla Walla onions, and bell and jalapeno peppers are among the items. Proceeds benefit the club's community projects.

Volunteers needed at Jetty Island

Everett Parks and Recreation and People For Puget Sound invite the public to a Jetty Island Weed Away Restoration Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on Jetty Island.

Volunteers plan to remove invasive blackberry and Scotch broom bushes. A free ferry departs from the 10th Street Boat Launch and Marine Park at 10th and W. Marine View Drive, Everett. For more information, call 360-336-1931 or e-mail koconnell@pugetsound.org.

Goodwill offers back-to-school supplies

Goodwill is offering back-to-school bargains at its stores, including two Everett locations at 3002 Hoyt Ave. and 228 SW Everett Mall Way. The average price of an item sold at Goodwill is $2.70. Goodwill has 16 stores in the north Puget Sound region. Stores offer a selection of new backpacks and gently-used clothes for kids. A new "Fashion Focus" section stocks brand-name and designer labels at low prices, including 7 For All Mankind jeans, Michael Kors sweaters and Express pants and tops.

Fundraiser set for burn victim on Monday

Friends and family of Devin Barnhart, a 23-year old Eagle Scout, invite the public to "Devinpallooza," a medical fundraiser, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 930 Meadow Way, Everett.

Organizers plan to offer a car wash, bake sale and yard sale to raise funds for Barnhart's medical care. In August Barnhart was burned over 70 percent of his body when he tried to save his friends from a house fire. Deposits can also be made to the Devin Barnhart Recovery Fund at any US Bank branch.

Foster kids need school supplies

Sleep Country USA holds its Foster Kids School Supplies Drive through Sept. 14. Store hours are Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donations of school supplies including pencils, notebooks, paper and backpacks can be dropped off at any Sleep Country store. Donations will be distributed among 20 Pacific Northwest foster care organizations.
