Everett resident receives Lions award

Paul Sjunnesen of Everett recently received the Lions International Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for "dedicated humanitarian services." As part of the award, a grant was given to the Lions International Foundation to support its fight against preventable and reversible blindness.

Sjunnesen serves as the first vice president of Everett Central Lions Club, where he has also served two terms as president.

Sjunnesen, who is a retired Everett Public Schools District superintendent, works on an interim basis with the Snohomish School District. Since his retirement from the Everett school district, Sjunnesen has served as an interim superintendent and adviser with other school districts. His service to the community also includes work in drug and alcohol abuse prevention, the arts, local economic growth, his church and, since 1973, work with Lions clubs.

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club, with more than 45,000 clubs in 202 countries.

Kiwanis Club raises $10,000 at auction

The Snohomish Kiwanis Club recently raised more than $10,000 at its annual auction. Among those helping at the event were Steve Robinson, auctioneer and honorary Kiwanian for the day; Jerry Davis; Scott Solla; Mark Phelps; and Deena Jones.

The club also named new officers for the 2008-09 year. Terms are set to start in October.

Jay VanAssche was elected president. Officers named were: Allister Brookes, president-elect; Kate Maloney, vice president; and Dallas VanDyke, treasurer. Board members are Aaron Hammer, Joey Hammer, Jim Garcia and Howard Lewis.

County sheriff's officers compete

Two officers from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office recently were among 1,000 other athletes from police and fire agencies across Canada and the United States who competed in the Can-Am Police-Fire Games held in Saskatchewan, Canada. Detective Rebecca Lewis and Bureau Chief Rob Beidler won 17 medals between them.

Beidler competed in bench press, javelin, shot put and swimming events. He won eight gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal. Lewis competed in bench press, free throw, three-point shooting, shot put, javelin and discus. She won three gold medals and three silver medals.

Scout executive to oversee Klahaya

The Boy Scouts of America recently assigned James Monroe to serve as manager and operating officer of the Klahaya District of the Mount Baker Council BSA. Monroe replaces Pete Reeder, who recently retired from serving as a professional Scouter.

As manager, Monroe is slated to work with a volunteer district committee that oversees the organization, operation and promotion of the Scouting program within the district.

The Klahaya District includes the communities of Cathcart, Clearview, Echo Lake, Gold Bar, Index, Lake Stevens, Maltby, Monroe, Skykomish, Snohomish, Sultan and the Snohomish Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Everett youth readers honored by mayor

Everett youth who recently completed the Everett Public Library's Summer Reading Program were honored at the Mayor's Award ceremony at the Everett Civic Auditorium in Everett. Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson greeted the kids as Library Director Eileen Simmons presented award certificates.

This year more than 1,000 kids and teens participated in the summer reading program. The program is designed to help kids keep their reading skills sharp during the summer and to help them prepare for school. Kids who finished the program by reading 100 books or completing 100 timed 30-minute reading sessions earned up to five prizes including free pizzas, baseball game tickets and other prizes donated by Everett businesses.

Rotary club names officers, board

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary recently named new officers and board members for 2008-09.

Rene Porubek of Mukilteo was named president. Porubek is a real-estate agent with Windermere Real Estate.

Other officers named were: Fred Baxter of Fred Baxter and Associates Architecture, president-elect; Sharon Berry of Electronic Business Machines, treasurer; Teresa Robinson of Shoreline Bank, secretary; and Gary Kenna of Everett Pacific Investments LLC, sergeant at arms. Cathy Reese of Windermere Real Estate was named immediate past president.

Red Cross volunteers deploy to Texas

Eight Snohomish County Chapter Red Cross volunteers recently deployed to San Antonio, Texas, to join other Red Cross volunteers from across the country to help with Hurricane Dolly on the Gulf Coast. They reported to the Red Cross staging area at Kelly Air Force Base.

Volunteers who deployed, listed by their home towns were: Dave Alcorta, Bill Thayer, Steven Place and Leslie Winkler of Everett; Roger Fox of Edmonds; Chuck Pierce of Arlington; Steve Taylor of Gold Bar; and Bill Westlake of Mountlake Terrace.

Red Cross disaster relief assignments are normally for three weeks.

Elite gardeners honored by Mill Creek

The city of Mill Creek's Arts and Beautification Board recently named 12 gardeners winners in the annual Great Garden Award program which recognizes Mill Creek residents who have put exceptional time and effort into the beautification of their properties. Each winner received a keepsake and a yard sign placed in their yard for the month of August. Winners are also slated to be recognized by the Mill Creek City Council at the Sept. 9 regular council meeting.

Marysville firefighters help at camp

Two Marysville firefighters recently volunteered to spend a week as counselors at Camp Waskowitz, a camp in North Bend for children with muscular dystrophy. Firefighter Kelley Smith, a fire district employee since 1992, and Ryan Swobody, a fire district employee since 2007, worked as counselors at the eight-day camp. While Smith and Swobody were away at camp, other firefighters volunteered to work their shifts.

Firefighters from Marysville have a long relationship with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and have participated in events such as the annual Fill-the-Boot fundraiser, the MDA Lock-Up and MDA charity poker tournaments.
