Here are some highlights: Visual arts In Seattle Center's Northwest Rooms, Bumbershoot patrons work with Gage Academy of Art's program called "Drawing Jam," to try their hand in a fine arts studio, complete with models, celebrity appearances, professional artist demonstrations and free art supplies. In the Power of One in the Olympic and Orcas rooms, curator Marita Holdaway of Benham Gallery will bring together artists who will talk about the influence individuals can make in society. Featured artists and activities include the Eames brothers and noted photojournalist Nina Berman's work on Purple Heart recipients. Henry Art Gallery's satellite cele-brates performance in contemporary art through video programs and live performance. The Rainier Room will be transformed by New York-based group Grand Openings, who will create their immersive, participatory events. During non-performance times, visitors can watch video reels that highlight the recent resurgence of performance created just for the camera. Daniel R. Smith and Iman Raad have curated The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show: a collection of 25 posters from each city that share cultural themes. The exhibit will showcase some of Iran's top graphic artists, paired with works by Seattle designers Robynne Raye of Modern Dog, Coby Schultz and Barry Ament of the Ames Bros. Through conversation, food and multimedia exposition, One Pot will investigate the legacy of the cultural and political revolution that swept the world in 1968. Guests, artists, musicians and writers are invited to the prep kitchen and 40-foot table in the Shaw Room to participate. Comedy Comedy Stage North in Intiman Theatre is packed with stand-up from Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Buteau and Greg Behrendt to Tig Notaro, Doug Benson, Karen Kilgariff, Hannibal Burress, Jessi Klein, TJ Miller and Nick Thune. Comedy Stage South in Charlotte Martin Theatre will feature a live edition of the public radio show "The Sound of Young America." The MySpace Show will improvise the personal details of audience members' Internet profiles. Satiristas Janeane Garofalo, Marc Maron, Tom Rhodes and Rep. Richard (Dick) Martin will team up to target political hypocrisy, media distortion and cultural ignorance, and "Human Giant" members Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel and Aziz Ansari will bring their MTV show to the stage with the help of their friends. Comedy Stage West in The Vera Project will host Pacific Northwest comedy co-curated with Seattle's own People's Republic of Komedy. Programs include "It's Good to Know People"; "Blood Squad: Slasher Film Improv"; Bridgetown Showcase and Best of The Comedy Underground. Literary arts The 2008 literary lineup will feature William Gibson, Saul Williams, "Comix Sub-Heroes" (Dan Clowes and Adrian Tomine with Ivan Brunetti), "This Hotel" (Edmund White and Samantha Hunt with Christopher Frizzelle), "Away Down South" (Kevin Sessums and David Schmader with Carlotta), "New Fiction" (Sarah Shun-lien Bynum and Jonathan Evison with Paul Constant), "Your Little Hoodrat Friends" (Joshua Furst and Jeff Parker with Lesli Wood), "Us and Them" (Nathan McCall and Joan Silber with Stephanie Ellis-Smith), "The Office" (Joshua Ferris and Chip Kidd with Lyall Bush), a session with Tiny Gray-Garcia and Pat Graney's Prison Project, "Adventures in Teen" (Tonya Hurley, Karen Finneyfrock and 10-year-old Adora Svitak), "The Kids Are Alright" (Ellen Hopkins, Francesca Lia Block and Ned Vizzini with Deb Caletti), Canary Sing, Eileen Gunn and John Osebold. Additionally, wordwise patrons can take in the first Northwest edition of the Post-It Note Reading Series in which a live reading is accompanied by Sharpie illustrations on Post-It notes (displayed on a large screen). A dynamic duo, Sherman Alexie and The Stranger present "Words and Music," featuring Alexie, Jim Boyd, the West Marginals, Sean Nelson and others. Sara Bynoe performs "F**k Off And Die: Tales in Teen Angst Poetry" while Christa Bell's one-woman show "CoochieMagik" fuses poetic text, stand-up comedy, feminism, hip-hop and personal gospel. Town Hall and ACT Theatre's "Short Stories Live" welcomes professional actors to stage dramatic readings of stories by Rebecca Brown and Ryan Boudinot, plus there's "Cheap Wine and Poetry" served up by Marya Sea Kaminski, Rebecca Hoogs, Eben Eldridge, Karen Finneyfrock and Bret Fetzer. Dance and performance The 2008 Dance and Performance Program begins at 1:30 p.m. Saturday with LAUNCH dance theater and NW Professional Dance Project. Throughout the weekend, daily doses of dance will be offered in the International Fountain as well as performances by Joe Goode Performance Group's latest piece, "Wonderboy," that exhibits a blend of dance and theater. Artistry, dance and performance combine Saturday and Sunday at Apocalypse in Coney Island with "A Bumberlesque Cabaret," an edgy burlesque featuring some of New York's wildest such as Dirty Martini, the reigning queen of striptease and classic burlesque, the first ever Mr. Exotic World and the trapeze-swinging Wau Wau Sisters. Pacific Northwest Ballet will present three contemporary ballets on Monday including "Nine Sinatra Songs" from dance icon Twyla Tharp, and "Interrupted Pri'si'zh'en" and "Lacrymosa." On the Boards will showcase bluegrass by The Half Brothers, A-Hole Baryshnikovs (songs about miserable people), and TODAY! There's also The Stranger Genius Award winner and relentless creative force, Seattle School presents RECESSION! and the J-pop band featuring visual effects and lip-synching loaded with "anime flava." Theater Tucked inside the Center House is an intimate black-box theater for the stage shows. The Theatre Puget Sound offerings include two performances each of "Reefer Madness: The Musical!," "Unicycle Collective: Monolodge 5," "The Snow Queen: Gerda's Journey" and "Yoga Bitch." Additional performances will include "The Oh, My God It's Oh So True Story of Halle Berry Halybere," "Memory War Theatre Project," and productions by Richard Hugo House's Resident Theatres "The Nexus Project" and "Sex in Seattle." Film Curated by the Seattle International Film Festival, the 1 Reel Film Festival will feature 27 themed, one-hour programs including family films, films about food, films from Iran, student films, documentaries, socio-political shorts and favorites from the 2008 SIFF. On the festival grounds Check out Hand2Mouth's living time capsule "Project X: You Are Here"; acornDance's "Fountain/Works" in the International Fountain; Byron Au Yong's "Kidnapping Water: Bottled Operas in the DuPen Fountain"; Amy-Ellen Flatchestedmama Trefsger's "Inquiries for an Artist Who Doesn't Draw or Paint"; Katharina Mouratidi's "The Other Globalisation"; Jasmine Zimmerman's "Bottle House"; Vaughn Bell's "Cultivation Utility Vehicle" and Paul Rucker's interactive cello concerts. Fans also can see how double-dutch is done today, take in Australia's Strange Fruit bend and sway show in choreographed elegance 15 feet above the crowd, and check out top skateboarders and BMX bikers' vertical lift at the ROCKSTAR Energy Drink Vert Ramp on the International Fountain Lawn. Kids' activities The 2008 lineup includes an Asylum Street Spankers performance geared toward their youngest fans and a performance by Seattle's School of Rock featuring the Northwest's next wave of musical talent. Films4Families are film shorts appropriate for children. On the stage, theater simple will present a version of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen." Inside the Sound Transit Kids Pavilion in the Center House, kids can build a rocket ship or train, help make an animated movie, get "muddy," check out cool exhibits from the Pacific Science Center and learn to limbo with Radio Disney.
