Judd & Black awards $10,000 to charity
Employees of Judd and Black recently presented a $10,000 check to Christmas House board members at the conclusion of the company's annual charity golf tournament at Battle Creek Golf Course.
Christmas House president Rick Kvangnes, vice president Pam Sorenson and directors Jan Barrow, Bryan Allen, Charlotte Wood, Larry Lark, Sylvia May and Tom Thetford were on hand to accept the gift.
Grocery donates $300 to food bank
The owners of the Monroe Grocery Outlet, John and Jaimee Haynes, recently donated more than $300 and several pounds of food to the Sky Valley Food Bank in Monroe. The money and food was collected during the store's eighth anniversary celebration and customer appreciation lunch.
During the anniversary event, the Hayneses provided each customer with a hot dog and a pop for a suggested donation of 50 cents. Most people gave more than 50 cents. The proceeds and the food collected were donated to the food bank. Food bank volunteers Eric DeBelly, board member; Jackson Stewart-DeBelly; and Carla Stewart spent the day cooking, serving and collecting funds and food.
Volunteers remove graffiti in Lynnwood
Lynnwood Police Citizen Patrol volunteers Sang Chong and Terry Solvang joined police officers, volunteers, members of the Lynnwood Explorer group and the city's public works staff and Lynnwood City Council member Mark Smith to remove graffiti throughout the city as part of the city's ongoing graffiti removal program.
The city of Lynnwood asks citizens to help prevent this crime by calling 911 so an officer can come out to take a report and photograph the graffiti. The property owner should clean up the graffiti within 48 hours.
Camp Fire receives First Heritage pledge
Camp Fire USA Snohomish County recently received a $10,000 pledge from First Heritage Bank, bringing its total pledges to $2,004,860 toward its $2.7 million capital campaign goal. Cathy Reines, president and chief executive officer of First Heritage Bank, announced the pledge.
The campaign now moves into the community phase, which focuses on the Legacy Square at the new welcome center in the main parking area at Camp Killoqua. The welcome center is the third of five new structures to be built at the camp. When Legacy Square is complete, it is expected to have granite pavers displayed along with the donor wall. Community members can pledge gifts ranging from $100 to $5,000 toward the pavers.
Everett Rotary Club names new officers
The Rotary Club of Everett Port Gardner recently named A. Sean Bailey as president of the board of directors for the 2008-09 year. Bailey is a financial adviser with LPL Financial.
The following members were elected to serve additional terms as directors: Lorne Wallitner, past president; Thom Martin, president elect; Carol Williams, secretary; Scott Eastham, treasurer.
New club directors named were: Connie Lewis, public relations; Pete Kinch, club service; Ralph Arney, club administration; Bill Steenis, membership; and Carl Varner, Rotary Foundation.
Kiwanis Club raises $10,000 at auction
The Arlington Kiwanis Club recently raised more than $10,000 at its Fourth of July scholarship auction. Among those helping at the event were Steve Robinson, auctioneer and honorary Kiwanian for the day; Jerry Davis; Scott Solla; Mark Phelps; and Deena Jones.
Arlington Kiwanis Club current officers are: Jan Bauer, president; Michael Prihoda, vice president; David Boulton, secretary; and Deena Jones, treasurer.

VFW Auxiliary post chief goes national
Tami Wagoner of Everett, a member of the Walter A. Deebach Auxiliary No. 1040 Veterans of Foreign Wars, recently participated in the 95th national convention of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.
The convention marked the beginning of her 2008-09 term as national chairman for the 15 states in the Western Conference on the Voice of Democracy-Patriot's Pen Program.
Boy Scouts present leadership awards
The Mount Baker Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently presented its Venturing leadership awards at an awards ceremony.
Suzanne Hahn and Keri DeVilbiss received Regional Venturing Leadership Awards.
Eric Lichneckert, Jeremy Makin and Peter Self received Venturing local awards. Lichneckert is a youth member of Venturing Crew No. 23, chartered by Faith Lutheran Church in Everett. He is also an Eagle Scout. Makin is the Skipper of Sea Scout Ship No. 6, chartered by the Port of Edmonds. Self is the adviser of Venturing Crew No. 4012, chartered by the Ferndale 2nd Ward Bellingham Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake.
Chief Thomas Greene of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office also presented heroism awards to members of Explorer Post No. 207 for their quick action in helping at the scene of a house fire. The youth members of Post No. 207 honored were Ashley Tochterman, Michael Brown, Matt Tochterman and Lauren Kono.
Greene also recognized Bellingham Cub Scout Paul Jackson Jr. and adult leader Nicki Gorski for their lifesaving efforts. Paul is a member of Cub Scout Pack No. 4019, chartered by the First Bible and Missionary Conference. Gorski is a volunteer with Boy Scout Troop No. 20 in Everett.

The Snohomish Kiwanis Club club recently named new officers for the 2008-09 year. Terms are set to start in October.
Jay VanAssche was elected president. Officers named were: Allister Brookes, president-elect; Kate Maloney, vice president; and Dallas VanDyke, treasurer. Board members are Aaron Hammer, Joey Hammer, Jim Garcia and Howard Lewis.
Operation School Bell receives $25,000
The Assistance League of Everett recently received a $25,000 grant from the EverTrust Foundation to help fund its Operation School Bell Teen Retail Program. The program, which was recently launched by the league, provides clothing for high school students.
Teens at 26 local high schools and alternative schools are invited to a shopping night at a local clothing store where they can choose school-appropriate clothing. For 43 years, Operation School Bell has provide school clothing to kids in need throughout Snohomish County.
Assistance League of Everett is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that operates several philanthropic programs including Operation School Bell.
Eighth-grader has tae kwon do black belt
Michael Annis of Lake Stevens, an eighth-grader at Cavelero Mid High School, recently was awarded a black belt in tae kwon do. His instructor was Brandon Ness of Team Fitness. Michael has studied tae kwon do for five years starting at age 8. Achieving a black belt denotes expertise in martial arts. Michael also studies jiujitsu and kick-boxing and hopes to achieve a black belt in jiujitsu. Michael is a lifelong Lake Stevens resident.
NW Junior Pipe Band first place in world
The Northwest Junior Pipe Band recently visited Scotland for the World Pipe Band Championships, winning first place at the Perth Highland Games. The band, which competed in grade four, achieved the highest scores overall in the Perth competition. While in Scotland, the band competed in a variety of competitions, placing in the top six bands in five of its six competitions. To win the chance to travel to Scotland, the band placed first locally, in a field of 11 grade-four pipe bands.
The Northwest Junior Pipe Band is a nonprofit organization for youth up to age 18 with an average age of 14. After two years of fundraising and three years of planning, the youth traveled to Scotland for the competition. The band is the first youth bagpipe band from Washington state to go to the world championships.
County groups win People's Bank money
Peoples Bank recently awarded $500 each to two Snohomish County organizations. The Rotary Club of Mill Creek and Arts of Snohomish received the awards. In the second quarter of 2008, Peoples Bank contributed $35,000 to support local organizations, $70,000 year-to-date.
Rotary Club of Mill Creek is a service organization comprised of business and professional people. Arts of Snohomish is a nonprofit gallery featuring community-minded artists.
County residents compete in handguns
Two Snohomish County residents recently won the chance to compete in the United States Practical Shooting Association's 2008 National Handgun Championships at the U.S. Shooting Academy on Friday.
Bruce Gary of Everett and Lisa Munson of Marysville plan to compete against more than 600 others in the eight-day competition. In all, 43 states and 11 countries are expected to be represented in the matches.
The championships are expected to be broken into two major events. The first is the Smith and Wesson Limited, Production and Revolver Championships. The second event is the USPSA Open and Limited-10 National Championships. Shooters can compete in only one division within each of the two matches.
The USPSA National Handgun Championships are the highlight of the practical shooting season in the United States, and in 2008, a prelude for the International Practical Shooting Confederation World Championships scheduled for October in Bali, Indonesia.
