Ralph, David and all that shock

Posted at 9:16 am by Jerry Cornfield

First, Ralph Thomas said he was departing the Seattle Times. Now, his co-worker and friend, David Postman, Seattle Times’ chief political reporter, is leaving too.

They are a dynamically talented duo so there is not much good in that news except this: No longer will I need to trudge down my driveway around 5:30 a.m. most mornings to read the competition (them) to see if I had been beat and if so how badly.

I’ll sleep another half hour because as skilled as their colleague Andrew Garber is (he is the very skilled third member of the Times statehouse reporters) I’m counting on him not picking up the pace too quickly to cover the departures.

Ralph and David are respected from this side of the United States (starting with Alaska) to the other side (ending in the halls of Congress). If they didn’t know it before, they surely are learning it through phone calls, e-mails and blog posts like this.

(There is one person, who I won’t name, writing for a blog, that I won’t identify, that seems to think David is a descendant of the devil and will likely offer a different view of my analysis.)

Ralph and David are most respected among the press corps in the Blue House and the White House here in Olympia.

I have much to ask both of them before they go.

Of all my questions, one is most pressing.

Can I get one of your guys’ parking spots next to the building?
