Another Wildcat victory. Archbishop Murphy used an air-tight first-half defense to shut down the Lynden Lions en route to 26-15 non-league victory in front of a packed house at Terry Ennis Stadium. The victory gave the Wildcats (1-0) a chance to move on from last season, when the team lost its head coach, Terry Ennis, to cancer before its third game, then had to forfeit its last eight games because of a paperwork error. "It felt good to be back on the field and to play football and let the players determine the outcome. Now that stuff is in the past," first-year head coach Dave Ward said. "To see the guys come out and play hard right out and take it to them was great. The guys know we can keep this tradition strong." The Wildcats held the 2006 2A state champions scoreless in the first half, limiting Lynden to just 19 yards rushing. The Lions (0-1) managed just two first downs in the first half and the Wildcats snagged an interception, forced and recovered a fumble, deflected two passes and sacked Lynden quarterback Jordan Hastings twice. "We put the pressure on them, the defense really hit well," Ward said. In the first half alone, Murphy's Alex Martinez had an interception and a pass deflection and JJ Quinlan recorded a half sack and recovered a fumble. Quinlan's fumble recovery came on a punt return and set up the Wildcats' first touchdown -- a Russel Stiegler 1-yard run. Murphy would get on the board again in the first quarter when quarterback Jake Downs found split-end JD Melton in the corner of the end zone. The Wildcats' passing offense was effective as Downs completed three of his four passes for 74 yards and two TDs. Melton hauled in two of those passes for 68 yards, and Quinlan added a 6-yard TD reception in the second quarter. "The offense found some plays to move the ball. We threw the ball effectively early and that was nice to see," Ward said. Ten Murphy players carried the ball, with sophomore Randy Gordon (six carries, 58 yards) and senior CJ Milburn (nine carries, 52 yards) leading the way. Martinez, whose fumble earlier in the night led to a Lynden touchdown, redeemed himself with a third-quarter TD run that opened up a 26-8 lead. Lynden took advantage of that Martinez turnover when Hastings found wide receiver Ryan Seto for a 4-yard TD pass. Hastings and Seto connected again with 53 seconds remaining in the game but by then it was too little too late. "It was a quality high school football game. The hitting and execution was as good as the 4A," said Ward, who stepped down from coaching the Class 4A Oak Harbor Wildcats after last season.
