Bus service expanded between Lynnwood and Smokey Point to meet demand

Community Transit is set to increase bus service between Lynnwood and Smokey Point to meet increased demand for service, starting on Sept. 21.

The change should allow people to catch a bus every 15 minutes at the Lynnwood Transit Center or Everett Station heading to Smokey Point via Marysville.

The increase is expected to add about 8,000 hours of bus service annually for passengers, according to Community Transit.

The agency has seen its ridership rise 14 percent this year over 2007, as high gas prices prompt commuters to try transit options.

About 1 million people used the agency's buses in July.

Community Transit already provides 15-minute bus service on the Mill Creek-to-Edmonds corridor that serves the Alderwood mall, the Lynnwood Transit Center and the Edmonds ferry dock. Fifteen-minute service also is provided on the Highway 99 corridor between Aurora Village and south Everett.

Meanwhile, a fare increase is set to go into effect on the agency's buses on Oct. 1. Adult local fares will be $1.50; adult commuter fares will be $3.50 from trips to and from south Snohomish County and $4.50 for north and east Snohomish County trips. Senior citizens and people with disabilities will not charged increased fares.

For more information on the fall service change, go to www.communitytransit.org.
