Talking offense with Tim Lappano

Tim Lappano had is usual Tuesday sit down with reporters, and as always had plenty of interesting things to say.
Here are some highlights:
Asked what the goals are for the bye week, Lappano said, "We need to get our run game cranked up. That's going to be the number one emphasis going into this week. I'm not pleased with where we are at. There's not enough consistency in the two-back game or the one-back game. We are better than what we are operating. I think we have improved throwing the football, but I don't think we have improved running the football, so we've got to get that cranked up."
Lappano also said they'll use this week to look at some players who so far haven't broken into the rotation, particularly at receiver. He mentioned Anthony Boyles and Cody Bruns as two receivers they'll be looking at this week.
Asked if they are to the point of looking to redshirt guys, he said, "Pretty soon. Don't think we have to do that yet but pretty soon have to decide whether someone is out or in."
Lappano was asked about Kavario Middleton, who didn't play much last week after catching eight passes in his first two game.
"He hurt his knee pretty good in the BYU game. He came back and played with it hurt, which I thought was pretty cool. Didn't do well in practice Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. You could tell it had slowed him. He didn't play real fast, so I don't think he was nearly healthy and against an outfit like that, that showed up a little bit because he struggled a little bit to separate where he hadn't really had that struggle the past two games."
And of course it wouldn't be a discussion of the offense without talking about Jake Locker.
"I think he's throwing better, I really do," Lappano said. "I still want to see the timing on the deeper routes. I think he needs to get the ball out a little bit sooner and trust his receivers to be where they are supposed to and stem the route correctly and get out of the break correctly. I think he's just got to trust that and get it out a little bit earlier. I think the timing will improve for him and all that. There's no question he is throwing the quick passing game and the intermediate stuff pretty good right now. He had one poor throw in that game, a naked boot and he tried to throw it against the grain and it should have been picked. But he hasn't had a pick yet, knock on wood, and he's throwing it better."
One topic that has come up a few times this week has been the low snaps from center Juan Garcia. Lappano thought Garcia may have been too worried about his battle with tackle DeMarcus Granger and not focused on the snaps.
"That’s focus," he said. "I think that guy was a load for Juan at times and he got into his little one-on-one battle more with that guy that he did getting the ball back. His first job is to get Jake the football and hit him in stride on the numbers. I think that he was starting to drop down and try to get underneath that guy and win that battle, which he should, but still you can’t abandon your technique and I think he abandoned his technique a little bit to try to get underneath that guy and get some leverage on him, and when he did that the ball slid on the ground too many times."
"I don’t think that’s going to be a problem. He knows. Nobody felt worse than he did. But he’s been doing a good job, and I think we can get that corrected. We have to. This is a spread-gun offense. You can’t operate from the gun if you can’t snap it."
