Cascade making its mark on Wesco South

Cascade, which moved from the Wesco North this season, has already had an impact on the Wesco South, knocking off Kamiak, last year's third-place team, last week.

Tonight the Bruins take on 2007 runner-up Mariner. Another win would have Cascade sitting pretty for one of the division's three postseason playoff berths. Mariner is also looking to go 2-0 in conference.

Although not traditional rivals, the two programs have long histories of success in the Wesco and they are neighboring schools. So I expect a heightened level of excitement by both teams.

Here's a look at the Mariner-Cascade showdown and the rest of the weekend schedule:

Mariner at Cascade

When: 5 tonight

Where: Everett Memorial Stadium

Records: Mariner is 1-0 in the Wesco South, 1-1 overall. Cascade is 1-0, 2-0.

Quick slant: This game pits two of the top three quarterbacks in the Wesco South. Kamiak's Sam Rupple is 32-for-50 for 312 yards and two touchdowns after two games. Cascade's Aaron Frye is 12-for-21 for 253 yards and three TDs. Frye has also rushed 23 times for 123 yards and two TDs. Kamiak has struggled with its ground game. The Knight's top rusher has just 52 yards.

Mike Cane's pick: Mariner 20-19; John McDonald's pick: Cascade 17-7; Tom Lafferty's pick: Mariner 24-21

Jackson at Arlington

When: 7 p.m. tonight

Where: Larson Stadium

Records: Both teams are 2-0 overall.

Quick slant: This may be a non-league game but it is the first big test for both teams. Jackson began with games against Stanwood and Shorewood, two teams which won four games between them last year. Arlington opened with two straight Class 3A opponents (Glacier Peak and Lynnwood). One is a new program without seniors. The other is coming off a 2-8 season. That's not to belittle either team. Both have shown a great deal of offensive expertise. Jackson boasts one of the top running backs in the Wesco South. Taylor Cox has 20 carries for 258 yards and five TDs. Arlington fields one of the top QBs in the Wesco North. Jake Parduhn has completed 18 of 29 passes for 227 yards and four TDs and rushed 28 times for 264 yards and three TDs.

Mike Cane's pick: Jackson 27-21; John McDonald's pick: Jackson 35-28; Tom Lafferty's pick: Jackson 34-7

Oak Harbor at Everett

When: 8 tonight

Where: Everett Memorial Stadium

Records: Both teams are 1-1 overall.

Quick slant: After losing its home opener, Oak Harbor survived a trip to Monroe last week. They need another Road Warrior effort against Everett. The Seagulls won at home in Week 1 against Bishop Blanchet, then struggled on the road against the Wesco South's defending champion Edmonds-Woodway. This game could be a pretty good indicator of where each of these teams stand. If Everett can beat a formidable 4A team, they'll be a force to be reckoned with in the Wesco 3A. With another quality road win, Oak Harbor, already 1-0 in the Wesco North, will bolster its credentials as a playoff contender.

Mike Cane's pick: Oak Harbor 24-20; John McDonald's pick: Oak Harbor 21-20; Tom Lafferty's pick: Oak Harbor 35-14

Other games tonight

Wesco North: Stanwood (0-1) at Lake Stevens (2-0), 7 p.m.

Non-conference: Mountlake Terrace (1-1) vs. Meadowdale (1-0) at Edmonds Stadium, 5 p.m.

Marysville-Pilchuck (2-0) vs. Glacier Peak (0-2) at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Sedro-Woolley (0-2) at Monroe (1-1), Snohomish (1-1) vs. Shorecrest (0-2) at Shoreline Stadium, 7 p.m.

Lynnwood (0-2) vs. Edmonds-Woodway (1-1) at Edmonds Stadium, 8 p.m.

Cascade Conference: Granite Falls (1-1) at Archbishop Murphy (2-0), Sultan (0-2) at Cedarcrest (1-1), King's (2-0) at Coupeville (0-2), Lakewood (0-2) at South Whidbey (2-0), 7 p.m.

Saturday games

Wesco South: Shorewood (0-1, 0-2) vs. Kamiak (0-1, 0-2) at Qwest Field, 11 a.m.

Non-conference: Darrington (1-1) at Evergreen Lutheran (0-2), 12:30 p.m.; Highland Christian (1-1) at Tri-Cities Prep, 2 p.m.

Herald Writer Mike Cane and KRKO radio broadcaster Tom Lafferty were 2-1 on their picks last week. Herald Prep Editor John McDonald was 3-0. Cane is 7-2 for the season. Lafferty and McDonald are 5-4.
