Boeing books orders for 24 new jets
Herald staff and Associated Press
The Boeing Co. won orders for 24 new aircraft this week, including a request for nine 767 jets.
After going several weeks without significant orders, Boeing added the new requests Thursday to its Web site, bringing its year-to-date total to 610 net orders. All of the requests were attributed to an unidentified customer. However, Japan’s All Nippon Airways said it has negotiated for nine 767-300 Extended Range jets from Boeing due to the delays in the jet maker’s 787 Dreamliner program.
The airline won’t receive the first of its 50 787s on order until August 2009, more than a year behind schedule. Boeing has said it is still assessing how the Machinists’ strike will impact the 787’s schedule. The company had planned to fly the delayed jet for the first time late this year. But that milestone could slide if the Machinists’ strike, now in day 20, doesn’t end soon.
The new orders included one Boeing Business Jet, 10 737s, nine 767s and four 777s. Boeing’s orders have slowed over the past two months, bringing in only 38 new requests in August, down from 70 in July.
Last year, Boeing set a new sales record with 1,413 net orders. But high fuel costs have driven down orders for both Boeing and its rival Airbus. The European company, which updates its orders Web site monthly, had booked 708 net orders through the end of August.
