New segment of Highway 522 opens

BOTHELL – A new segment of eastbound Highway 522 opened for commuters early this morning, providing better access to the University of Washington’s Bothell campus, the state Department of Transportation reported.

The two eastbound lanes of the highway between Highway 527 and I-405 were closed over the weekend, as crews worked around the clock to connect the road to new straighter lanes. The work required drivers to take a detour around the busy segment of Highway 522, which runs between Monroe and Seattle.

The state is working with the University of Washington and Cascadia Community College to build a new entrance to the south side of the Bothell campus. The $50.7 million project is scheduled to wrap up in fall 2009.
