VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Archbishop Murphy takes care of Cedarcrest

EVERETT -- The Archbishop Murphy volleyball team's goal Monday night was to keep Cedarcrest out of its offensive sets with an aggressive offense of its own. Apparently Becca Gotz took the message to heart as she converted 16 of 19 kill attempts and led the Wildcats to a 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 Cascade Conference victory.

"I told the setter to just keep going to her," Archbishop Murphy coach Jim Hardy said.

Down 6-9 in the first set, the Wildcats went on an 11-0 run and never looked back. As a team, Archbishop Murphy ended up with 37 kills, 11 aces, 33 assists and 11 blocks.

"What really worked for us tonight was converting back-row attacking," Hardy said. "Ashley (Broadwell) and Becca were very effective back there."

RaeLea Davidson had five kills for Cedarcrest and teammates Lindsey Smith and Sara Howser had 13 assists and three blocks, respectively.

Archbishop Murphy improves to 4-0 in league and overall, while Cedarcrest falls to 2-2, 3-2. The victory will be of significant importance when district seeding comes around since Archbishop Murphy and Cedarcrest are the top two respectively ranked 2A teams in the Cascade Conference.

King's 3, Sultan 0: At Sultan, King's (5-0) stayed undefeated, rolling over Sultan (0-5) to take a 25-9, 25-7, 25-11 Cascade Conference victory.

Lakewood 3, Coupeville 0: At Coupeville, Liliya Kibitskaya had 10 kills and 10 digs, Peyton Mizell added 12 kills, and Lakewood rolled to a 25-23, 25-15, 25-22 Cascade Conference victory. Coupeville (1-4) was led by Linde Maertens 11 kills and 13 digs and Julie Huddleston's 13 assists.

South Whidbey 3, Granite Falls 1: At Langley, Audrey Murphy had 11 kills for Granite Falls (2-3) and Brennan Johnson added 16 digs but South Whidbey took a 25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 25-22 Cascade Conference victory.
