BOYS TENNIS ROUNDUP

Panthers hand Bruins another loss

EVERETT -- When you are on an undefeated team like the Snohomish boys tennis team, opponents will be gunning for you. It's nothing the Panthers get worked up about though, even if their opponent is second behind them in the standings with its only loss being against them.

"We've got a senior-oriented group," Snohomish coach Dick Jansen said. "They know what's at stake and they know how to handle it."

Handle it Snohomish did, defeating the Cascade Bruins 5-2 Monday at Cascade High School.

"They really rose to the occasion," Jansen said.

In the previous meeting, Snohomish defeated Cascade 6-1 but three of the four singles matches went to three sets. Cascade coach Ashley Layton hoped to build on that.

"Singles was key (to our strategy)," Layton said. "We matched up really closely the first time."

Nichol Ratzke suffered Snohomish's sole loss in the previous meeting but got redemption Monday by defeating Johnny Mills 6-2, 7-5.

Bruin Brendan Beaver, who fell to Reed Pecha 6-4, 6-1 last time, was the only Cascade singles victory, defeating Pecha 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

"I believe that's (Pecha's) first loss in two years," Jansen said.

Garrett Johnson and Ysmael Abad of Cascade also avenged a previous loss, albeit against different opponents, as they defeated Kevin Chittenden and Matt Scott 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
