Shorewood beats Glacier Peak in conference opener

The Shorewood girls soccer team is still hot.

Shorewood kicked off Western Conference South Division play with a 1-0 win over Class 3A Glacier Peak, Thursday, Oct. 2 at Shoreline Stadium.

Midfielder Kayli Kamacho followed up on a loose ball inside the goal box and scored in the 31st minute.

That was all the Thunderbirds needed as the defense shut down the Grizzlies.

Goalkeeper Madison Hollenbeck notched her sixth consecutive shut out.

Kamacho cleaned up after senior center midfielder Louise Albin launched a high-arcing shot from 30 yards out on the right side that slipped through the hands of Glacier Peak goalkeeper Nicole Giovine.

Shorewood got off 18 shots to Glacier Peak’s four, 10 coming the second half, although the lone goal was scored in the first half.

“We had pretty good control of the game towards the end but I think the game control was shifting back and forth there for awhile,” Kamacho said. “Overall, we kind of dominated I think.”

It was Kamacho’s second game back after becoming academically eligible.

“It’s so nice to have her back in the middle,” Shorewood coach Nathan Davis said. “She’s very smart and sees the field well. She’s very calm. Her and Louise in the middle, it’s just a fantastic duo. It also gives me more subs.”

Shorewood improved to 1-0 in the conference and 7-0-1 overall while Glacier Peak, a new school in Snohomish with no seniors, dropped to 0-1 and 3-4-1.

"They play the fastest, I would probably say," Glacier Peak coach Melinda Torre said. "This is the best team we've played all season."

The game was a defensive, physical struggle and the more experienced T-birds held the edge.

“It’s kind of the story of our season,” Torre said. “We’re a young team. We don’t have any seniors and these are lessons they have to learn for us to win. I think it’s coming, it’s just not quite there yet.”

Shorewood’s defense led by senior defensive center midfielder Dominque Amor thwarted the Glacier Peak attack.

“We’re playing five across the back. We’ve got the four, and then kind of we stick one right behind the center too. That’s Dom,” Davis said. “She’s kind of got free reign. In the second half she did a fantastic job of staying back more, while the first half you saw her get all the way up to the other 18 and get shots on goal. That’s our threat, get her up and back real quick.”

Albin’s presence in the middle has also been vital to Shorewood’s success.
“She’s a person other teams know and respect and so she’s a threat,” Davis said. “Teams are going to double on her and man mark on her all night long. She’s got the skill to work around it.”

Shorewood’s hot start in nonconference games built confidence that has continued.

“I think it helped that we came out really strong,” Amor said. “We have that mindset now and now that we are undefeated, we have the confidence to go on and we know that we’re strong enough to beat these teams.”

“We all bring some determination and passion to the table and that really fires up the game,” Amor added. “Our bench is loud. We keep everything positive. Last year we struggled with being a team (but) the team chemistry this year is amazing.”

The T-birds’ are missing junior midfielder/defender Matreya Vanous who is out with a pulled hamstring. Senior Erin Tenney broke her collarbone before the season started and is hoping to return in a couple weeks, if cleared by her doctor.
