For all the teams, it's a matter of how they handle that emotional rollercoaster. "Its a huge operation pulling together 25 teams for a meet," Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson said. "You have kids that are wide-eyed and never seen that kind of stuff before. You walk throught that door and it's always intimidating, yet very inspiring at the same time." Mercer Island was the class of the Mukilteo Invite Saturday at the King County Aquatics Center, posting an impressive 511 points and qualifying for five different state swimming events. Marysville-Pilchuck also made strides in its appearance, finishing second overall with 447.5 points. The Tomahawks' lone state-qualifying time came in the girls 400-yard freestyle relay, with a time of 3 minutes, 50.35 seconds. "Marysville-Pilchuck is very deep (in its roster)," Erickson said. "They were trailing and then about halfway through shot up to second place. They are a team that can be very good down the road." Louise Moores of Kamiak finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, stopping the clocks at 24.78 and meeting the required 25.50 time limit to qualify herself for state. That time also beat Rikka Brunner's team record. Kamiak as a team finished fifth overall with 353 points. Last year, the Knights didn't qualify for state with their relay team until the district meet, whereas this year it is already done, a thing of the past, where Kamiak can look on to doing well at state and not worry about getting there. "We have an inexperienced team, and this is pretty much the halfway mark," Erickson said. "If we can get those state times like we did today, our focus is really prepared for state, which is a nice position to be in." Lake Stevens garnered 239 points for eighth place overall. Glacier Peak's Melissa Randolf took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.48, only 0.3 seconds faster than Moores' time. Glacier Peak finished 11th overall with 201 points. Next up for Kamiak is a meet with Mountlake Terrace and Anacortes, and Erickson is unsure of the success that they will see, since many of the top teams in Saturday's meet were smaller schools, 2A and 3A, just like Anacortes.
