After winning the first set 25-20, the Royals dropped the next two sets 13-25, 19-25. Just when it looked like the Mavericks (1-1 in league, 2-5 overall) might put the game away, Lynnwood came roaring back, taking the fourth set 25-23 and the last set 15-13 to win the Wesco South game. “It was an exciting, eventful game,” Meadowdale head coach Machen Shrum said. “It was pretty tight the whole time.” Lynnwood head coach Jean Kellogg echoed Shrum’s feelings. “It was an awesome game. It could have gone either way.” Shrum acknowledged her team’s slow start was a key factor in the loss. “That was were we lost the match,” she said of the first set. “Not taking control and winning.” The match came down to the final set that at one point was tied 12-12. “The last game was a nailbiter all the way,” Shrum said. “Our theme was ‘fight’ tonight,” Kellogg said, adding her team yelled “fight” in three different languages throughout the match to keep each other motivated. Jessika Barlow had 13 kills and Annie Ogle had 10 kills for Lynnwood (1-1, 5-2). Katie Thurston added 16 digs and freshman Mokun Fajemisin had 10 blocks. Lynsey Rohrbach (14 kills), Mara Eberth (11 kills) and Alexa Cannon (10 kills) led the attack for Meadowdale. Shrum praised Cannon, a junior, calling her the “breakout player” of the match. The Mavericks’ head coach admitted the defeat was tough on her team but was quick to point out that Meadowdale will come out swinging in its next game. “This was a heartbreaker,” Shrum said. “(But) our confidence and our competitiveness is starting to build speed. “We’re just looking forward to our next matches.” Jackson 3, Mariner 0: At Mill Creek, Jackson took three straight sets in the Wesco South game, defeating Mariner 25-14, 25-14, 25-11. Christy Cain had 12 kills and Cerise Knakal added 16 assists for the Timberwolves (1-1 in league, 2-5 overall). Brittany Ruscha had seven kills and six digs and Ho'Okena Varde had eight digs to lead Mariner (0-2, 0-7). Kamiak 3, Shorewood 0: At Mukilteo, Led by Bryce Larson (12 kills) and Jazmyne Dodd (9 kills), Kamiak won the Wesco South match in three straight sets, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19. Jessica Ramos added 11 digs for the Knights (2-0 in league, 6-0 overall), while Laura Postor had 10 digs for Shorewood (0-2, 3-4). Edmonds-Woodway 3, Shorecrest 2: At Shoreline, Leigh Fishback had 49 assists and Alex Storino had 30 digs to lift Edmonds-Woodway to a 25-15, 25-27, 21-25, 25-15, 15-11 Wesco South victory. Cailin Fellows added 23 kills, 10 digs and served four aces for the Warriors (2-0 in league, 5-2 overall). Gloria Tseng recorded nine kills for the Scots (1-1, 3-3).
